New Porsche Carrera 3.2 fuel line seems short
I'm doing a number of repairs on my 89 Carrera 3.2 while the engine is out, including replacing the fuel line that runs between the rails on flywheel side of engine. I have 2 concerns. First, it seems like it is shorter than the one I removed. I took a picture, but it can be misleading. It barely makes it between the fittings, and I have to stretch it quite a bit. I am putting it in to the line holder that is plastic and roughly mid way. Pelican did not have it in stock, and got it out of Atlanta. Related concern is I don't know how tight to turn the fitting. While tightening, I had that uneasy feeling of it never getting completely tight (like when a thread strips). I removed the line til I figure out what's going on. Anyone else have a similar problem? All of the other parts of the system, like fuel rails, seem like their in the right spot, and have never been removed.
Major bummer on timing, as I am almost ready to put engine back in. Any thoughts or help greatly appreciated! Mark ![]() |

The problem is "age". Some things shrink while others sag.
Seriously. You are correct! The new hoses are shorter. We did a fuel line job to help out a client a few months ago with new factory hoses and .... WTH (heck)? And then you'll try flipping the new hose because the fittings ends are not identical, but no joy. Somehow we did get the hose on. Alternately, you could make your own or take the old hose to any hose shop, have them cut off the ferrules and crimp new ferrules with the old fittings on a new hose..... OR Make a set of those funky stainless braided puppies with add on metric to AN fittings, but that will be even more funky. |

I found the same thing when doing mine last year. Mine came from Pelican. I did submit a concern to pelican but never got a reply. I did give thought to doing as Keuhl suggested but didn't.
Using a heat gun I gently heated the hose overall. While still hot I installed one end enough to catch a few threads but not fully tight. I then stretched it gently toward the other fitting, It was tighter than I cared for it to be, but did fit. I've checked it numerous times for any sort of stress cracks, releasing of the crimps or leaks and all looks great. If the rubber will shrink a bit over time, stretching back out cant hurt. Personally I think a rather large batch of hoses were probably made just a bit too short.

![]() ![]() It appears this part is coming thru too short from the factory, as others have the same complaint. I think they are coming thru at about 455mm or about 15mm-18mm less than they need to be. All rubber hose shrinks & dries out over time, so being too short when new is not acceptable. Cannot speak for the dealers, but our host already knows (per member AndyT) about this problem. I make up these crossover hoses........ ![]() in Plain Rubber, Braided Zinc (shown) and Braided SS. They are custom made using the latest multi-fuel hose and correct crimp in any length you specify. The ones shown are $60 plus shipping. The plain rubber are a bit less, the Braided SS a bit more. I also custom make or can re-hose most of the other Fuel & Oil hoses used on your Porsche. Happy to answer any questions, but please, NO PMs.........Email me for details.
