Instrumentation bulbs
I'm going to be refreshing a few of the burnt out instrument lighting bulbs in my '87 Carrera. What style bulb and wattage will I need for replacements?

The easiest thing to do is pull one out and bring it to your local FLAPS and match it up. They are about a $1 ea.

BA7s, 2 watts. Or you can upgrade to LED lighting and actually see your gauges

Etarga's bulbs are way brighter then the stock bulbs. Highly recommended.
Here is a thread with some photos for comparison: The Ultimate LED Ba7s bulbs for Gauges ala ETarga (pic & vid) Note that the non LED bulb that is shown for comparison is double the wattage of the factory bulb.

check his thread ... you could do stock replace but if your doing them all might as well upgrade "while your in there" .. remember the alt light gets a regular bulb or it wont charge your battery ....... |

Phil:
The alternator light does several things: Tells you if you are charging or draining your battery; and Provides a path for the battery to provide the initial excitation to the alternator winding so it can start making electricity. Because of this function, the lamp is very carefully selected and substitutions often lead to trouble. From Wikipedia (Alternator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "... The field windings are initially supplied power from the battery via the ignition switch and "charge" warning indicator (which is why the indicator is on when the ignition is on but the engine is not running). Once the engine is running and the alternator is generating power, a diode feeds the field current from the alternator main output equalizing the voltage across the warning indicator which goes off. The wire supplying the field current is often referred to as the "exciter" wire. The drawback of this arrangement is that if the warning lamp burns out or the "exciter" wire is disconnected, no current reaches the field windings and the alternator will not generate power. Some warning indicator circuits are equipped with a resistor in parallel with the lamp that permit excitation current to flow if the warning lamp burns out. The driver should check that the warning indicator is on when the engine is stopped; otherwise, there might not be any indication of a failure of the belt which may also drive the cooling water pump. Some alternators will self-excite when the engine reaches at a certain speed."

Not sure on the particulars of it but maybe etarga will jump in but .. in the charging circuit the bulb plays an important role in allowing your battery to charge ... something bout the current draw ... I am saying this not from experience with running an led in their but from threads I have read on the subject .. not just one but many say the same thing ....
I just know I have been told not to .. there was a thread not long ago about a burnt alternator due to them swapping that bulb .. I'll check if I can find it ... |
