They leak. What's the side to side movement like? An oil seal cannot handle much lateral movement. Are you sure its not escaping from the retaining bolt, that weird thin shank bolt with the big head.

It is leaking out the seals , not the retaining bolts . I am at a loss on this . The car was stored for years . We spent a long time getting it back in shape and then this . Could this be a sign of transaxle issues that are just starting ?

Thanks for your time

Brian

Is this the input shaft seal and do I have a dam seal?

Wrench... I'm not sure of the configuration of your transaxle but I do know that the breathers located on the top of the trans must have the vent hole facing to the front of the car. If this vent is facing the rear of the car, the blade inside serves as a scoop... and fluid ejection is the result. If fluid is flowing from the top of the trans... the breather position has a high probability of being the issue.

This photo is the trans in an '80 911.

I should have said that these are the output seals .

We checked the vent and it is clear and in the right position .

RMR has a point, Porsche says to fill to 1/2" below fill hole (don't know how you measure that). I've always filled to the hole, never a leak

When you pulled out the axle flanges did you shine up the place where the seal rides?

The other thing to check: I rebuilt a 72 a few months ago and noticed that one flange was a little longer (splined end to the flat where the seal runs). Never had seen that before. Maybe someone screwed that up years ago and they should perfectly match like all of the other 915's I've worked on. If they are truly different, swap them side to side and try that.

We put the level at about 1/2 " below the fill hole and so far it's dry . Every book I looked at says fill to the bottom of the hole . I am very glad it stopped leaking .
Thanks very much for the input.
