Air cleaner options for a 930 (or - Can we get this thing to suck a little cheaper?)

I'd like to know what different configurations you fellas have come up with for air filters on a 930.

Ain't no way I'm payin' $400 for a plastic pipe with a K&N filter mounted to it. Rediculous.
I've seen the small triangular hotrod carb filter used but don't know exactly how that was pulled off.

Thanks.

I have also seen the same thing on a 3.3 turbo. It was a Pep Boys special or Edebrock. It has to flow much better than the factory setup. From what I saw it took a small bit of fab work to fit/attach. I think it cost less than $40. Sure made the engine compartment look better.

RarlyL8,

We should really talk more in depth on our projects. We are doing or have done many of the same things in the past two years.

My car came with the Edelbrock setup. It takes quite a bit of fab work to get it installed properly. It does clean up the engine compartment, but I wasn't really happy with the overall results. I also purchased a Power Flow unit and sold it shortly after. I ended up switching back to the factory box for many reasons.

The Edelbrock setup requires a K&N filter on the Oil Breather line. I’ve attached some photos of this configuration.

Are you looking for more room in the engine compartment or better performance?

I was advised against the power-flo setup, and was told that if I felt I needed better intake, to put a K&N filter element in. Not to start the whole K&N debate again, but that is what I am useing.

I heard that OEM setup isn't bad at all, and as long as you are keeping that CIS cancer, fancy plastic tubes and cone filter ain't gonna give you any extra HP. (Source: dyno-sheets from CIS-equipped SC)

Mr Ruf -
I remember you posting this pic some time back. I wanted to see if you would sell it to me at that time, but you seemed pretty dissatisfied with it so I let it go.

I want to clean up/simplify the engine. Anything that isn't 100% needed is gone. I already have the air filters for the oil tank and the turbo oil reservoir so that is covered. I will not be using that rediculous looking stock filter housing. That thing is HUGE.

Someone posted a while back about modifying the original unit. Pictures anyone? I am quite willing to do a little tin work.

I'm getting close guys - this is the last small hurdle. I've got to tap that notorious aluminum plug to accept my boost gauge plumbing (thanks to all who helped me with that brain fart), then mount that big ol' intercooler and the motor is DONE!
Pix WILL follow.

The CIS unit on the turbo really makes it difficult to mount an aftermarket air filter. Not only do you have the CO adjustment/fuel lines to contend with but also the amount of room above the CIS plate itself.

I have a RUF modified air box (looks like the factory unit) that I mounted a K&N filter in. While this setup does take up a lot of room, it performs exceptionally well. I’ve talked with countless 930 experts who have tested and raced with just about everything. The majority of them concur that the factory box is the best solution.

I’ve seen small round filters installed on 930’s but the most common is the Edelbrock unit. It only runs around $9 at your local speed shop, so they are cheap. It’s basically a piece of foam with a mesh housing, not the best security for keeping out the elements.

Good luck in your quest, the engine looks great!

Hey Rarly

I've seen the stock airbox cut at about where the corrugations start on the sheet metal.A piece of sheet metal is used to cap off the cut and a K&N aircleaner (flat cone type) is attached to the fabricated piece of sheetmetal. It basically looks like a powerflow airfilter. I saw one for sale on ebay once. My one concern about this is the cut is made at about where the unit necks down (smallest cross sectional area). If you could flair (bellemouth) the sheet metal then add the "cap" and air filter I think this would be a good solution.

John - that is exactly what I've been thinking. Need to find a flat cone filter and measure the base.
