So, what does this mean? My O2 sensor doesn't work? Or, the O2 sensor counter doesn't work? Or both? Or something else?

I can see an O2 sensor attached to the car, but can't verify if it is functional or not.

Just asking because I'm due for a California smog check by mid-May.

Thanks!

Kodioneill gets the prize - mystery click solved - it is the plastic lens in the clock that's the culprit. On a drive today I noticed the first click shortly after the cabin heat was turned on. After waiting several minutes, I put a knuckle to the clock lens and pressed lightly - click on command! There's no mistaking it - volume, tonal quality, and source location are exactly confirmed.

In honor of Tazziman, I think this needs to be termed the "Neun-Elfer Effect".

I did the very same thing today! I was on my way to an Autocross and pushed lightly on the clock face. I heard the same click that had been haunting me for years. The mystery is solved.

Yup, I have the same issue. I noticed I can push in on the glass on the clock and get the same sound.

Seems to happen at random times. Going fast, still, car on, car off.

NutmegCarrera 04-22-2012 06:36 PM

Dang! And here, I thought that the sound was related to the fact that I'm nuts.

Never asked because I thought this was something that people would respond to by putting their hands in their pockets, rolling their eyes and shrugging. I tend to not ask these sorts of questions anymore.

On the other hand, I really HAVE found the right group!

Thanks, pelicans.

Clock?

80-911SC 04-23-2012 01:18 AM

do you have a glass lens on the clock or the plastic lens ....

83_Silberpfeil 04-25-2012 09:16 AM

Just drove the SC this AM ~ 40 mile drive. Turns out the ticking very frequent. About 2-3 ticks per second, but very faint --- not loud.

What could this be?

Glass for me, or at least the other gauges are glass.

RDM911 04-25-2012 09:52 AM

I have the same issue on my 85 Carrera. It always sounded to me that it came from the clock which is actually functional. I just figured that it was going to quit working. The click does seem to have a reality check function. I instinctively scan the gauges when I hear it.

It's coming from the OXS box behind the tach and/or speedo. Mine got louder about ~1000 miles before te light came on. Pull the gauge and push the reset button.

Thanks 9ball.

Just reset? This means nothing is broken? It won't hurt my smog check test coming up this weekend?

Thanks!

The way it was explained to me is that it is a dummy light that comes in around every 15k to remind you to take the car in for a checkup and potential valve adjustment.

All you guys are either paranoid or your engine/exhaust isn't loud enough.

+1, mine does this all the time, especially when it is hot outside.

PabloX 04-26-2012 12:11 PM

To follow up on this, I think mine is definitely the glass. I drove the 911 to work today and heard two clicks during the drive. They came about 1 minute apart and one was from the left (fuel and oil gauge) and sounded a bit deeper than the next which came from the clock.

Both had a tone that sounded like glass to me.
