Guess my tranny rebuild was "just in time".

Just got off the phone with Don at EBS and talked to him about my gearbox situation.
It appears that the transmission was just about on it's last legs.

He said that they were able to spin the pinion gear bearings... no not the inside... on the outside! So he says the plates are trashed. They also said there was a signifigant amount of wear on the pinion gears, and oddly enough, on the 5th and reverse sliders as well.

So it looks like my 915 will be getting all new synchro rings, hubs, sliders, operating sleeves, retaining plates, gear teeth, and bearings.
For a total of about $1600 to $1700... ouch... completely blew by budget on this one. But what can you do.... I want it done right.
So, it looks like I'll be eating ROmen noodles for another 3 months...

Hopefully I see one hell of an improvement when it gets back.

....jeez this car is sucking me dry...

Leland,

When I did my rebuild, the bushing on one of the two shafts (can't remember which one) would also spin in the case. John Walker recommened to just use some loctite to fix it to the case.

Tony, I think Leland means the bearing retaining plates; the cast steel one's with the counterbore on one side which clamp the bearings into/against the transmission housing. If a bearing outer race has been turning against these retaining plates they can be worn to the point that they will no longer reliably and evenly clamp and must be replaced. Cheers, Jim

The press fit of those bearings is not very tight and they pound themselves loose esp with high loads and heat (read you 3.6 guys). The solution (I'm told) is to replace the two piece bearing retaining plates with a one piece bearing retainer a la 930 transmissions available from Guard Transmission and probably some other places.

Lee, it will be worth it. The 79 SC I drove last week had a 915 with only 10,000 on it and it shifted like butter. So it will be money well spent. The only down side to the car I drove, it didn't have a short shift kit, and it was like shifting a Kenworth with all the shifter travel.

Well i most definately "spent the money".
It's just that I guess I wasn't expecting there to be unusual wear considering the condition of the rest of the car.

He even said that it looked like the car had been driven for a significant amount of time with the clutch out of adjustment.
Who knows...
Anyway, I am sooooo looking forward to the Roundup in July.

For those of you who don't know, my father was diagnosed with Brain cancer a couple weeks ago (part of the reason for my scarceness around here). Because of the english class I am taking, I cannot go home until the end of June. Then I have the roundup in July... they (parents) want me to come home but know how much I was looking forward to going to B.C. My father wouldn't hear of it. What a guy...
Unfortunately, it doesn't look good, but there's nothing that can be done so I can't just sit and mope.

Flying/driving home is just another unexpected expense... but that's how it goes...

Lee,
By now you have already read my (private) e-mail to you re: your father. Joan and I are very sad to hear this news. We are still hoping you can make the Round-Up, as are a whole bunch of your friends, but we'll understand if circumstances prevent it.
In the meanwhile, cope as best as you can, and please give our warmest regards to your dad.

Lee,

I guess I've been out of the loop for awhile, this was the first I have heard about your father. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Lee? I hope you know by now...we all do MEAN IT! Glad you decided to share with the entire board. Many of us have had parents in serious condition. It's never easy. But many of us on this board know your character, and there is no need to apologize for your absence from any event. You'll do what's best, and I have no doubt that the other guys here are with me on that. You need a group hug? We're all giving you one..through our keyboards. And we are all wishing we could do it in person..all at once...right guys? Lee, this may be sappy and it may be corny...but we know you are made of the "right stuff". At least half of that came from your father. Hang on to that... Best Wishes, Paul

My prayers include your dad and yourself, Leland. I recall many of your words about him and I envy your relationship.

I'm one of those board watchers, who regularly read many of these posts, w/o posting or replying much myself. The main reason is I'm not much of a wrench, letting a P-wrench do all my work. In this group I feel pretty darn inadequate, but enjoy reading everyones experiences.

By reading so many of these posts, I feel like part of the brotherhood we all share with the love of our cars.

Leland, even though you don't know me at all, like many of us here, we will think and pray for you, your father, and your family.

Leland- Sorry to hear of your tranny needing so much attention and even more sorry about your father. I will include you both in my prayers.

I also deal w/ Don @ EBS, isn't he great!?? I'm hoping he doesn't get to see my tranny for another couple years, but he will be the one to see it sooner or later.
Take care.
