Incredible Audio Discovery
Maybe I'm the last person on this planet to discover this but I found an FM transmitter unit that plugs into your cigarette lighter and allows you to play MP3 type devices and use USB and SD drives to play music over your vintage radio.
I bought it at Amazon and it's made by Satechi. It's called a Sound-Fly SD. Cost was about $35 and the sound is good considering it plays over an open FM channel on your radio. It holds up to 32G of songs and organizes them into folders if you want. It's a bit clumsy to use but works like a charm. For those of us that want to keep our vintage radio but miss having an ability to download and play music this is great. Thought the forum might be interested.

You are correct. I beleive you may be the last person on the planet to discover that!
FM transmitters can be pretty nice if you can get a station that works. |

I have this neat thing I put in my passenger seat called a gramaphone, Its really cool no plugs nothing you crank it up and it plays these round plastic things called records. Works really well especially if you put a pillow under it so it doesn't skip when you hit bumps.

Ok, ok
Hey, don't make fun of us over 50 guys! Maybe I wasn't the last one to know about this. Let's hear from the "older" generation about this.

Sympathy from another old guy. However, I have been using an XM device that sends an FM signal for about 5 years. They are a godsend to old cars that one might not want to bastardize.

I used an fm transmitter to add a cd changer to my Camaro in about '92 or '93. So don't worry you're only about 20 years or so late to the party!

I tried one and had problems with signal consistency.

I've never even heard of one. I'm about the most technologically-challenged man on the face of the Earth.

When I got my first car in 1975 it had an AM only radio. I bought a thing called an FM Converter. It was a FM radio that sent an AM radio signal to the AM radio. I suppose it made sense at the time.

I want to die quietly in my sleep not screaming in terror like the passengers in my car.

About ten years back, I had a 1978 Ford pickup. That thing was mint and original, right down to its AM only radio. Good thing I don't mind country music - not many other AM stations around here that aren't...

I've had an fm broadcaster for years for my iPod. It was fine back in 2007 or 2008, but over the last couple years the reception has become worse and worse. I don't know if it's more stations crowding the band or that the existing stations are upping their power. I recently bought a new one because the old one died, and there was no change. I suspect these things are only useful nowadays in small cities and rural areas. Back to the headphones for me.

Some of the audio experts will chime in with more details but I think you can also add an aux jack (hidden) and tie that into your system, all stealthy like. If you're serious about your music this might be a good way to go.
The aftermarket head unit the PO installed in my car died two years ago but I never used it. . . Time for a radio delete plate probably. |

a jack will give better fidelity; the FM transmitters give Kia level audio quality
