Approximate cost to paint a rear lid with a wing?
I've a had a wing sitting in my garage for a while now and need to get it painted prior to installation. Can any one give me a ballpark price for a paintjob on an integrated wing/lid. I just have no idea and was curious.
Thanks, Noel |

Noel.. if you are brave enough (and you know the exact color of the paint) you can try Maaco for around $100, did a fiberglass ducktail a while ago and it came very good.
How is going to throw the firts stone at me??

Jordi,
I won't. I've got a paint dilemma myself. My 83SC was painted less than a year before I got it. Not a bare-metal glass-out custom job, but nice color and depth, with a little overspray. But I've got rock chips on the front bumper, rear bumper and hood, and I'm replacing the rear spoiler with a plain decklid. I also hope to replace my SC valence with a Carrera style one with the integrated foglights and my US headlights with H4s with matching trim rings. Basically, everything will get painted but the doors and fenders. I don't want to throw on another layer of paint, nor do I want to pay for a half-assed discount paint job. Getting the pieces painted individually by any decent shop will likely cost close to what a paint job would. I've been seriously considering just having Maaco or (gasp!) Earl Schieb throw some Guards Red on the parts and put them back on myself. Either that, or buy an electric sprayer (I don't have compressed air), order some paint and clear coat, and do it bit-by-bit over some weekends to get some experience with paint. Emanuel

It all sounded great until you got to that paint it yourself idea. Before you try that on your 911, you should get a body part from an old junker and practice. Also, I think surface preparation is the most important thing. Before I put my Carrera wing on this week I discovered a deep 12" scratch along the underside. When I stored it away a few months ago I think I scraped it against something. Very ugly but in a spot that is hard to see. I have some Guards Red in a spray can so I decided to fix it myself. I filled in the scratch and sanded, and sanded. What a PITA. I sprayed it and quickly noticed that the the surface preparation was far from adequate. I did it all again. Same result. Finally, I gave up. I'm lucky that the scratch is in a place that one one can see. You almost have to stand on your head to see it. But the moral of the story is that unless you are an expert, body repair and painting should be left to the pros. Also, I don't think the 84 Guards Red was a clearcoat. My 85 has original paint and it is not a clearcoat.

I just had a rear spoiler painted and installed, cost was ~500 at a high end body shop.

i agree..... about $500 for a full out block and wet sanded job
maaco and earl scheib will do it for alot less and do a job that you would probably be happy with depends on how concours you want the wing to look...... Like most things in life... you get what you pay fpr

I've brought pieces to maaco. If you talk with the guy who is actually doing the painting, you would be surprised at the outcome. Yes, these guy can do crap work, but some of those guys have been spraying for years and do great work. Especially if it's for a porsche. They did an awesome job on the parts I brought down. Cheap as hell.
