'72 911 Originality Question...

On a '72 911 should the inside (backside) of the front and rear bumpers be painted to match the vehicle or should the undercoating be black?

Thanks much!

As far as I know the backside's of the bumpers are painted the same color as the car for the long hoods. Could be the same on the earlier SWB one's too.

Don't know but if you go to the Early 911S Registry Forums (Early 911S Registry), I am sure you will get an expert opinion.

On my '72, the back of of both front and rear bumpers appear to be the original color.

My recollection is the back-side was ‘poorly’ painted normal body color but the paint didn’t cover all the light-color plastic ‘wrinkle’ undercoat.
The result was similar to the under the pan, inner fenders and engine compartment.
Where the bumper mounts, fog lights and hardware attached, the undercoat had been masked off but then the masking removed before painting.
The fog light area was hand-painted black where it is visible from the front.

That is my lame recollection.

Best,
Grady
