Post Permatune or Crane Optical ignition?

I am having some ignition problems with my 71 911T, no spark to the coil.I am really not sure how this unit works with my existing system.Does it replace my CDI unit?I want to get rid of my prehistoric system.I need some info on which unit is better for my car?

Jerry, I think most owners of the 69-73 911's will tell you the stock Bosch CDI unit is the way to go. It is every bit as good as the after market CDI's. The stock Bosch unit should make a high pitched "whine" when the ignition is turned on. If not, something is wrong. When I got my 72 911E it had NO CDI and the PO was just running coil and points and it ran like a piece of ****. I went the Permatune route (cost being lower) and it works just fine. Keep in mind you either need to run the correct Bosch coil for a 71 911 or the Permatune coil.

Cool

Kurt, thanks for the input! My CDI unit does whine with ignition on. I've cleaned all connection and checked the grounds still no spark to the new coil. Can I run my stock bosch coil with the Permatune system or do I also need to purchase the Permatune coil?

I just reciently updated my 69 911 ignition with a MSD unit. I spent about $200 for the unit, MSD coil, and tachometer adapter. I ordered it through Summit Racing. Simple to install. It's great.

Wow! thats a bargain! I didn't realize MSD made an early aftermarket ignition for our cars? Does this ignition do away with the points? How tough was it to install? Did it plug right in to your harness? Thanks for the tip!!

You can go to their web site and check out all the different models features. Some have rev limiters, dial up or plug in modules, some don't. The unit I got was the MSD 6A pn 6200, along with the blaster 2 coil pn 8222, and the tach adapter pn 8910. My 911 didn't have a cd unit, so it was just a matter of running a +, and a - wire to the battery, and wiring the rest to the distributor and coil. It took all of 1 hour. There is a good tech article here on Pelican, where its installed in a 914. There is also a detailed set of instructions on the MSD web site http://www.msdignition.com/
The setup does not completely do away with the points, but it won't wear them out either.

Jerry it sounds like your Bosch unit is working and that you just have a bad wire somewhere. Although, don't discount a bad coil even if it is brand new. I wouldn't just run out and buy a new system until you are sure of what the problem is.

Jerry!

Kurt's advise is dead on. I wouldn't replace anything that 'might' be broken. That route will cost you a fortune. Find out what you NEED. The stock system is a very good (if not great) system. I did extensive trouble shooting on my stock 70T's ignition system last year. If you need any help, let me know. I'll be glad to help.
