Removing Half Shaft

Every now and then the stars line up and for a while, you live happily ever after.

The CV boot was torn, old age I suppose.

So I took off the wheel and removed the center cap.

Put the wheel back on and found the 3/4 drive socket and breaker bar for the wheel nut. With a 2 foot cheater , it would not budge. With a 6 foot pipe, recently a fence pole, it budged quite easily.

I cobbled enough 1/2 drive extensions, a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter and the right size hex to remove the inner CV bolts from outside the car. With the 1/2 drive I could really lean on the hex.

At most it took half an hour. That number is only slightly exaggerated.

The right tools really make it easy

Every once in a while for some reason I run into the same thing with the wheel lug nuts. Pulled my wheels of my 81 at my buddies house and had to use a big honkin' pipe on the breaker bar. He was on my ass like no one's business about how I was a hack wrench. Then we went to his low mileage 930 to pull his wheels and the needed the same piece of pipe.

Maybe temperature variations can cause this. When you put them on vs. when you take them off??

OMG - get under that car, lay on you back and bond with it. Praise Jeebus.

Putting them back on will require the deep dive. Get some new grease in there.

Bob's right. But you haven't truly bonded with the car until you change the starter, and learn to hug your transmission.

Indeed! It doesn't get much more intimate

The cavity search for the front hood strut clip on the drivers side is very intimate as well.

I tied the front hood clip on the driver's side to a piece of dental floss. Still a PIA.

I made my 7 year old son do it because of his little hands. It worked but I think it scarred him. :-)

yes, well, I own a 911 AND my girlfriend has a 330xi BMW. (E46)....and I assure you... having been there.... that you will FAR prefer replacing a 911 starter. Really. Not kidding.
I think if that thing fails again, I will either breakup with her, or pay a shop to do the job.
