Started my 1974 911 today after sitting for several months while away. Car started fine but I noticed oil leaking from passenger side of exhaust and white smoke. That cleared up after running for about twenty minutes. Never a problem when driving often. No idea what to look at first...

White smoke usually means coolant or brake fluid. Since you are air cooled that's not an issue. Are you sure it's not blue smoke? (oil leak?) Water in the fuel will create steam from combustion chamber. If it's oil then you valve guide seals are leaking oil into the combustion chamber and burning it off in 20 minutes

I thought white smoke usually meant a new Pope.

Typically a 911 that sits for a period will smoke like crazy for awhile and all the seals etc that have dried out come back after getting lubrication for the first time you drive it after sitting..YMMV

Water is a byproduct of engine combustion. White smoke is the water vapor from the engine escaping into the air by the tail pipes. Clearing of white smoke after 20 minutes of idling is a bit long but quite possibly normal. This is also a reason why driving the car for 10 minutes everyday is extremely bad for the car because the engine is never hot enough to burn off all water in the oil and ruining the oil's capability as a lubricant.

How long should it typically take for oil that's acumulated, say overnight, to burn off? 10+ mins?

Smoke after just sitting over night is not good. Many 911s will smoke after being parked for some weeks, but not over night.

My car doesn't smoke, is that okay? Or should I take it back to Tom Williams?
