108mm Inner CV Joint

The CV flange on my 915 Trans is the 108mm unit that does not have a provision for a gasket and the axle side does not have the cover shown in the PET catalog. It was not leaking when I disconnected the CV joints to remove the engine & trans. What functions as a seal to keep the grease from leaking out?

The 108mm flanges w/o the provision for a gasket are designed to be used with the covered CV joint. That being said, CV grease is pretty thick and clean, flat metal to metal contact as you have will keep the grease in.

Thanks for the reply; should I be OK as is or add the covers?

You could try a non-hardening sealant on that seam. With no gasket or sealant the grease will leak out when it gets hot.

Yep the metal to metal contact with no seal is actually how it was done on the older CVs that did not have the silly paper gasket. Andy's certainly correct that the leakage will eventually happen as the grease breaks down over time.

I think I have a few of those end caps in my box(es) of spare parts if you'd like me to look.

Here's the tech bulletin from Porsche about the axle update

Thanks guys, the joints had been together without covers for over 20 years and hadn't leaked, but to be safe, I ordered 2 covers this morning. I'll have to check the length of the old bolts to see if the same length replacements can be used with the covers.
