Details Needed Re: Modifying Stock Muffler for dual outlet/removing baffles.

so i have been reading the various threads regarding the modification of a stock muffler and there seems to be a lot of information regarding ripping out the guts of an older muffler and going to a dual "pee-shooter" look, but i was hoping for a bit more information from someone who has been down this path with a SC or a 3.2 Carrera. I am about to finish law school for the year and the car will be spending some quality time out of commission (new ball joints, new tie rods, new shocks). I was thinking about doing some muffler mods (dual out, ripping out the baffles for a more purposeful exhaust note) as well but i don't quite know what the best approach is for someone who would like it louder, but not ridiculously so. I dug the dual out under the license plate look that a fellow pelicanite did recently on his red 3.2 (sorry, name is escaping me right now) but then what do you do about the opening on the left side of the valence? fiberglass? 911Nut also posted about removing baffles and putting in two of his own, does anyone else have experience with this?

i would be considering a dual out muffler by one of the usual suspects (dansk, bursch, etc.) but i have two concerns: 1) don't want to be bumped out of class just yet in PCA auto-x and i'm pretty sure a muffler will do this (seems a bit silly to me, but oh well) and 2) i'm on a student's budget (ie broke as could be).

Any schematics, pictures and experiences would be appreciated.

thanks,
David Benett

David-

I run SSIs and a sport muffler on my otherwise stock 3.0 CIS motor and it works very well. I kept to a single outlet, though, instead of going to the dual outlet, as I must pass a 92db @ 50' sound limitation in local events.

Our PCA region does not penalize exhaust modifications- they are free. Check your local rules. I have a jpeg posted at my website of the Upfixin' article from Panorama explaining and showing a schematic of the dual-out modification. I did the same internal mods to mine but removed the whole slotted pipe section and kept the single outlet. You can download or view the file at http://members.rennlist.com/tweedt/sptmuff.jpg

so i looked at the PCA-GGR auto-x rules and they say

"Any muffler, which is functionally equivalent to the stock muffler, may be used. This allows owner to replace worn out mufflers with reasonable-cost options, but does not allow performance-enhancing mufflers in the stock category."

To me, this means that if i want more noise i need to gut my muffler and do another outlet. I don't think that i can play off a bursch (which will give a marginal hp increase) as a "reasonalbe-cost" option. Maybe though....

Still looking for someone who has done this w/ a 3.0 or 3.2 car.
