TACH Question

I have a tach question.

Can an early tachometer (silver button tach) be used with an 1984-1989 Carrera engine with the stock Motronic?

If not, can the silver button needle be transferred to the later model tachometer?

I haven't tried it and wanted to know if anyone knew the answer before I started collecting parts.

P.S. I know if I sent it out to North Hollywood Speedometer, they could probably build me what I want, but I really don't want to spend that much just to have a silver center tach.

"Can an early tachometer (silver button tach) be used with an 1984-1989 Carrera engine with the stock Motronic?"

No not directly, it requires a high voltage pulse. But running a separate direct wire from the coil
to the tach may work.

"If not, can the silver button needle be transferred to the later model tachometer?"

Yes, the needles can be easily changed.

"P.S. I know if I sent it out to North Hollywood Speedometer, they could probably build me what I want, but I really don't want to spend that much just to have a silver center tach."

Pelican Parts has a tach/speedo rebuilding capability. Just use the phone & call.

Is there any pre-load on the tach shaft if I were to remove the needle and replace it with the early silver center needle?

No, just R&R the needle.
