RSR plastic outer door handle - available?
 

Is there anybody making reproductions of the plastic outer door handles originally made by DOM for the later 911 race cars, like the RSR? I know about the 911R style plastic handles that are sold by TRE and others, but those are different than the ones I seek.

Yes, there are originals available, if I wanted to spend 1,000 euros, but I'm looking for something a little more reasonable.

The attached photo, borrowed from the elevenparts.com web site, shows what I'm after. It needs to be able to accomodate the later release mechanism and locking cylinder.

Yeah, they're nice, probably weigh only a few ounces each and lots of people would buy a set. The question is, does anybody make reproductions of these things? I'm starting to think that the answer is no...

Yes, those are both made by the same guy. Lots of them have been sold but they are not the ones that I'm looking for.

You're looking for later RSR ones, but what is later, 964, 993?

The ones I posted are also available for the 911's with mechanism through the little lever instead of pushing the lock cylinder...

I don't know when that might be, so I was asking if there's another source that is available now. My guess is that the answer is no...

Hmmm, but for me, TRE may have them available.

The 70's RSRs did not have plastic handles.
I had a pair of these on my former orange Carrera 3.o, they worked perfectly. Worries were raised at the time about crash safety, i.e. what if the handle breaks off in a crash and you're in the car, injured.

What TRE has are the earlier, pushbutton style handles.

I've seen more than one RSR that used them, and others say that they were available at some point in the '70's, so.... The picture at the top of the thread is supposed to be an original factory part.

Regardless, I'm after a set of these. I've spoken to Dave at TRE this morning and he doesn't think they will be available this year, although making them has been discussed.

Where did you get yours? Got any more where those came from?

I've seen a lot of RSRs and I've never seen one with plastic door handles ... so I for one would love to see a photo... just 'cause I'd like to... not sayin they didn't have them but I have my doubts. Eleven parts shows an R tach with a green numerals and as far as I understand, the 911R had white numerals. But then, I've been wrong before.

I'm 98 percent sure that no one is making plastic door handles pictured in your first post. The guy who makes the handles for TRE is Mike Swanson... he's in the midwest... the links in proffighters post is Mike's site. I've bought quite a few handles directly from him...He's a good guy and always looking to improve the strength of his handles.

But, I'll tell you from experience, as far a breakage is concerned, it's not a question of if, but when.

I wouldn't be surprised if he could reproduce the above handle but he'd have to have something to make a cast from.

I am rather positive they were not available at the time. My mechanic worked at the factory and raced RSRs at the time in private teams, and he'd know. Such a specific and special detail would be all over the books, like the 911R handles.

Some guy in Germany stumbled by chance on a whole bag of those, probably over 100. I got my pair from him, must have been around 2001-2002. He inquired at the factory, and after denying they made them, they reluctantly admitted having had a batch made, but never used. How they got out of the factory is a mystery. They had a part number that was unique, so it was a factory effort for sure. Production seemed to be mid to late 80's. Details are foggy, as it was 10 years ago.

After I had contact to Mike Swanson, who makes some RSR replica outer door handles, he is not responding anymore... He agreed to make some for me, but now???

Sounds like a job for a 3D printer- pretty sure I saw a thread somewhere where a guy had a plastic shift knob made by an online company that does 3D printing on spec. Do a google search.

If anyone has a CAD file I can print them. I just got a 3D printer.

Clint at Rebel Racing Products sells them. May indeed get them from TRE?

Regarding factory RSR door handles. Yes, they did indeed use them. I personally saw them on several of Vasek's factory race cars way back when. Those cars did not use a lock cylinder or trigger paddle. They used the spring loaded push button to actuate the door release mechanism. The 2.1 turbo RSR had aluminum buttons

3D printing would indeed be an option, and bet that it will be expensive to get all the details right. I would suggest a nylon like plastic so there is some flexibility to the piece

Were the handles the same as the '74-on black handles, or earlier versions?
I know (see it every week) of an original '74 RSR that has never been modified, and it has std alloy handles, with locks.

yes, there are indeed the same black 74 on look made in plastic. Very few cars got these and would have probably got themselves in trouble if the tech inspectors paid attention

I know Mike made the some of the lock type ones, like on top of the pic I posted. I also suggest he uses some fiber reinforced stuff, which is far superior to ABS etc. what 3D printers use.

However, the problem is not to print, but who makes the CAD file? I thought about buying a printer a year ago, but after reading a lot about, I decided to stay away (at least for a while), ask one who learned CAD how long it takes to be familar enough with the software to create your own stuff. Reminds me on excel...

what the TS an me look for is the later 74-86 ahndles in plastic

but I guess I'll have to make my own.

From posts I’ve read, it seems these (or some) handles can be modified to work with later latch mechanisms. You may want to call a source and/or explore further before looking for a bolt-on solution for your MY.

The factory race department usually used the later style handles with a non locking piece of spring loaded pin like the 911R. The 2.1 turbo RSR , that i saw at Vasek's back in the day, had a piece of aluminum in place of the lock cylinder on it's plastic door handles- no lever to release

Bringing this thread back from the dead as I'd also like to get some plastic door handles that used the lock mechanism and were trigger-style. I have seen that the 911R handles can be modified to use the stock lock mechanism (presuming one has the push-buttons to begin with) but I think the trigger style look a bit better and are a bit safer.

Maybe it's time to laser scan and throw it in CAD. I've got Solidworks and a 3D printer but no laser scanner, and my 3D printer doesn't make structural parts.

I have a 3D scanner and if someone can get me a part I’d happily scan it. Of course it’ll require some clean up and modification but if you can work Solid Works it should be no problem.

Printing via a service like Shapeways or 3D hubs is pretty easy- I’ve used them for parts and it’s really affordable, so long as you aren’t printing platinum or gold.

Well I've got one handle that's not on the car and could ship if there's interest from more people, or we could work out a deal to get a repro one or other one from the classifieds that is closer to you.

I've had good luck with MJF nylon from Forecast 3D but with a CAD file we could even do them out of solid delrin.
