I seem to remember they were group 39 batteries. I don't know a lot about battery sizing vernacular, but I bought several brands over the year using that designation....

Unless you need it for Concurs, why not go to a single Optima battery? Dollarwise not much of a difference and you will no linger need to deal with the corrosion issues related to a a conventional battery.

FWIW, I installed a red top Optima on the drivers side several years ago and will not look back.

I thought Interstate stopped making the U911. That's what they say on the web site. I just had to buy one from Porsche. What was interesting was that the Atlanta warehouse only has 2 in stock.

Welcome 007! Notice this is a discussion started by 72 Four Door concerning his batteries? Click on THIS LINK to start your own thread to introduce yourself and your car. Everyone here loves new introductions especially if you include pictures of your car.

If you spend a little time looking around this forum, you will find that this site is a huge resource for 911's. Use the search function first to find answers to your questions. If you can't find what you're looking for, ask the question. Try to be as specific as possible.

Richard, sweet ride. Looks like a 72 or 73. What size tires and rims are you running in the posted picture. Sorry guys did not mean to side track the battery question. I purchased a couple of Sonnenschein batterys a couple of years ago for my 72 T and are still giving great service. I wanted to keep things as original as possible.

Interstate still makes the "U911" - but try Arc Battery - they can get more cranking amps than the two U911 batteries in the same size of one. They do custom batteries, batteries for solar, for boats, for electric cars.. but their batteries are simple and look retro. Definitely better than the Optima and also cheaper than the interstate. (unless you are driving upside-down)

I have had their batteries in cars for over 10 years.

The U911 Interstate batteries are rarely sold, so if you buy one it may have been sitting in a shop for a year or two. The ARC batteries are made to order (which also means you can do a custom size)

I bought the right size U911? from Interstate last year. Contacted my local carrier of Interstate and he ordered them - took a couple of weeks but the right stuff.

I went with a Red Top Optima on its side on the drivers side box. I also cut off the right side battery box to make room for a Carrera cooler and fan. But then, I was not too concerned for originality (at the time) on my '72. Function over form in my realm. YMMV
