just brought my new 911 to CA and failed smog :(

No biggie, all the emissions stuff checked out fine. But Mr. Dennis Wong says my airbox has been tampered with. It looks OK to me.

You need to find a new smog guy... Clearly while modified that would not impact emissions. Alas, this is the reason I have had '74 and older cars.

Mr Dennis Wong is not following his own guide lines. You are saying the numbers were all good but he failed you because of the modification? What a dick, pun intended Mr Wong.

There is a Visual and a Tailpipe test, the OP obviously failed the Visual.

I bought a spare, stock air-box cover just for this purpose. It was around $30 used.

bad idea

replace the top - it will help hold down the filter and save your motor from grit

+1 - in the chain of restrictions I don't think the filter cover comes close to significant. I don't recall reading that on any threads here. The pick up point using the stock part might grab cooler air, just a thought. In any case the cut up cover looks.... bad in IMHO.

k&n's are junk IMO. I won't ever use one. Paper filters the air better, is cheaper to buy, and is easier to maintain.

I don't know if I'd say junk, but I would never use a K&N on a road car if I could use a paper filter.

People have posted links to tests here re K&N; also as hcoles noted there is nothing about the cover restricting air flow; instead, old posts of tests on here show just the opposite, and I think Bruce Anderson found the same thing.

The following emissions components are also part of the visual portion of the smog inspection. The smog technician will need to see that they are present and properly connected. Most modern vehicles are equipped with most of these components.

- Air Filter & Housing
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
- Engine Coolant Temp Sensor (ECT)
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)
- Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS)
- Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT)

I guess Mr Wong was just doing his job, sorry Mr Wong.

Failing visuals because of that is absolutely ridiculous. The least they coulda done is to tell you that the cut cover won't pass, technically, and that you outta have a proper box cover. But failing you for that is a total joke. Cali CARB is a freakin' joke!
