You can do this yourself with standard tools in your garage. Have the system evaced efore you start. Locate key components (cond under deck lid, in the front, compressor, evap in smugglers box, dryer in left front wheel arch).

Follow the hoses. If you don't want to replace the system cut the hoses and save yourself a lot of trouble.

Yes there is freon in your system. It needs to be evacuated by a pro. A typical service center, like Midas can do it. Cost me small dollars back in 2005-6. Like $50 or so.

as I said have the system evacuated - by a pro shop - before you start.

the rest is straight forward.

The refrigerant is harmful to the environment. It is not explosive or flammable (under routine conditions) but is not allowed to be released in the atmosphere in the US. From what I have read on Google in the last three minutes, the handling laws in Australia are more strict than the US.

Chances are kj's system is already empty anyways,as they were all known to leak !
I removed my AC system down to the last bolt two years ago and it sure gives you much more access in the engine bay.
Be patient and everything will come off smoothly ... some things with a little more effort but it all comes out

Cheers !

It does indeed. If you really want to be anal, re-use the screws and rubber washers (with a dab of silicone) to plug the holes where the hoses route. In this spirit, you may want to cover some large holes in the smugglers box and you'll need to shape a piece of tin for where the compressor bracket used to be in the engine bay, but you can easily do the whole job start to end in a weekend, or even a long Saturday.

No pic ; just start in engine bay , disconnect hoses from compressor - remove compressor and its brackets. Remove radiator thingy from under engine lid. Remove blower and associated thingy from inside smuggler's box. Remove blower next to battery (black cone thingy to right of the jack). Then have some fun pulling out all the hoses. I had to saw through some of mine , nasty job with the wire reinforced hosing.

Plug all holes and go for a spin in your even more agile 911
Weigh all the junk you removed and give yourself a pat on the back.

You now have:

1. better acceleration
2. better fuel economy
3. more effective brakes
4. less weight hanging behind the back axle , useful when on the limit!

Yep , pull it all out!
As long as fuel doesn't drip out you are on the right track
It's a very cathartic process and you should enjoy every bolt removed.

You have a pretty interesting updated AC system there, I wonder what other interesting pieces you may have at the end of those hoses. Certainly not factory for an SC.

That sure doesn't look like the system in my '84 or an SC that I can remember. I'm currently having an internal debate about removing my ac.

why are you removing this? it looks like an updated aftermarket system. have you tried having it re-charged to see if it works?
