Most important upgrade is to what is sitting in the drivers seat. Seat time, seat time, seat time...
Most bang for the buck is R compound tires. They will immediately take seconds off your time. If you are just starting out though, I would stay with street tires for a season. You learn car control more quickly on the street tire because they break loose at lower speeds. R comps can mask bad driving habits. I would focus on sorting out the suspension. If it has not been done already I would replace bushings and shocks first. Put bilstein sport shocks in the rear and bilstein HDs in the front. There are several busing styles for the front control arms and rear spring plates. Read the rules for the organization you plan to compete in, before you buy the bushings. Some organizations, SCCA for example, will bump you a class if you use metallic bushings. You can put in stiffer torsion bars, adjustable sway bars, turbo tie rod ends, lower the car, put in a bump steer kit, put in a strut brace. Next, I would go with racing seats, harnesses, dead pedal and adjustable accelerator pedal. If you get good and haven't run out of cash, you can do brake and engine updates. But best money spent is seat time, seat time, seat time...

Read the rulebook.
If you want to Autocross, nothing is more discouraging than finding out you have to run against much quicker cars than yours because of some minor upgrade that pushed you into a higher class. Pick a class, and modify (or not if staying in the stock class) the car to stay within those specific class rules. |
