Squirel Cage

I'm in the process of changing my evaporator blower motor on my '87 930, but am having difficulty removing the squirrel cage from the motor shaft. There is no cir-clip or snap ring holding it on so I assume it's either pressed or glued on.

It doesn't appear very sturdy so I'm reluctant to to continue prying. The space between the blower vanes is pretty small and I don't know if I can find puller feet small enough to fit.

Has anyone else ever removed their squirrel cage from their blower motor or have any ideas? I'd hate to break it.

Thanks!

Kurt, it has been a while since I did this so I am working on memory. I replaced the front motor for the condensor. It had 2 very small allen bolts. The evaporator motor I think has the same allen bolts. Look closely on the squirrel cage there will be 1 or 2 small holes by the shaft, usually 90 degrees to one another. Inside those holes will be the allen bolts. Thats how it was with the condensor motor so I am assuming the evaporator motor squirrel cage is secured the same way.

Brian is correct. It may be necessary to soak the shaft with PB Blaster after you loosen the allen screws as the shaft may have a little "corrosion" on it.

Thanks Ben and Brian,
I checked again and there are no allen screws holding the cage to the motor shaft. Additionally, the shaft on the new motor is completely smooth, no spot for any allen screws. The cage is a very light weight plastic and doesn't look like it will take much abuse.

Kurt, the pics of your squirrel cage are definitely different than mine. Mine is all metal, and has a band connecting the vanes at both ends, and there is a space left to get to the allen screws.

Maybe yours is aftermarket and has been replaced sometime in the past? I have an '88 Carrera. I never was able to get mine separated from the old motor shaft, so took out the motor and cage altogether. Now I just have air entering the housing when I'm moving. I don't have stop 'n go traffic, so that isn't an issue.

Robby,
My front condenser fan is steel like yours. I could be wrong but I'm assuming my plastic evaporator fan is original.

Totally different from the one I had before it caught on fire. Mine was metal and an enclosed squirrel cage.

Reviving an old thread as I am going through the same issue. I just replaced the front condenser motor that was seized and all burnt, and the evap motor is in the same condition.
How the heck do I remove the squirrel cage from the motor?
Removing the motor itself from the 1/2 box was a challenge...

Next: checking the fresh air blower as that fuse kept blowing...

I did manage to pull the fan off the shaft.
Now comes the difficult part: sourcing a motor as Bosch 0130063043 has been discontinued.
Does anyone know if a new model superseded this motor part #?
I found similar motors for Mercedes Benz for under $100 with a different shaft but nothing for my 86 Carrera. I really don't want to spend $300 for an entire unit with fan...
Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks, I looked at the parts but came to the conclusion that my motor was in such bad shape that I want to replace with new or rebuilt and not with an older one.
The search continues...

Was this recently? Where did you manage to get a new motor?
See how badly "cooked" my old one was...

And here is the shaft with the fan removed...

Please excuse the iPhone picture quality...
