76, 912E rare but not valuable
I'm sorry I feel like ranting. Cant tell you how many 76, 912E I have seen advertised for more than a comparable 911.....??? The ads always point out how rare they are, how few were made....asking prices usually around $15,000. The reason they are rare is they didnt sell many, the reason they didnt sell many is because they are kinda lame, compared to a 911. 0-60 times of what 15 seconds.....lame. Anyway, just felt like ranting about this for some reason.

lol, back in the day, Bruce Anderson used to call the 912E a "fraud," before times changed and he felt he had to become more politically correct, like everyone else.

I take magazine called Men's Journal and this month's issue (Feb. 2011) there was an article about this fella searching high and low for 912E and how excited he was to located a "good one." I can not understand it, geez what could be a man's fascination with such a lame a** Porsche. A 914 2.0 was a more worthy platform for that engine (I had one of them once) or perhaps a '74 911 (had one of them too). YMMV

I think 911 prices are stupid right now. Guys advertising 160K mile 911SC's for 20K? Come on. Every other car has dropped in value in the last two years, but the 911's are being advertised with higher and higher prices. ...for absolute turd cars.
My dad bought his pristine, concours winning 38K mile, '83SC cab for 18K about 4 years ago, and that was a premium price back then. in '08 when the economy took a crap, the values dropped, but now they've artificially gone back up again. I think it's funny when 911 guys (of which i am) complain that 912's are "overvalued." it's almost a case of little d*#* syndrome. out of 8 porsches i've owned, my favorite has been my '67 912. it was pure, it was fun. when a 911 guy complains that a 912 is too slow, i guess the same could be said about the 911....by a corvette ZR1 guy. is the 912E a more rare car than a 911? certainly. is it more valuable? possibly. that's dictated by what people will spend.

I dare you to post these comments on the 912 board. They have a completely different opinion, especially at AX. Beating on other people's rides is just plain uncool by auto enthusiasts.

Everybody loves their car(s), I just think it's funny when sellers use the word "rare", like the dude with the "1st" 911.

Y'know, guys, it boils down to this, I think: There's a seat for every ass. We all get to drive what we want to drive. As a former 912 owner, there's no way in hell I'd trade my SC for my former car, which was pretty damned nice. But slow. Real slow. With serious parts and service problems. Folks like 'em though, and that's fine. I'll stick with a proper Porsche with a real motor. As for the 912E, VW engine and all, they're pretty nice cars, nicely balanced. If somebody prefers one of those to an SC, for instance, more power (actually, less power - a whole lot less) to them.
It's tempting to say, however, that those who want Volkswagens have plenty of them from which to choose. So let 'em buy Volkswagens. But I'm not mean enough to say that....

I just think it is funny when 912E are described as "rare", that is my main point. Rare, yeah they didn't make that many...valuable....that is debatable....we will see...time will tell.
