Almost there will "fuel smell in the cabin"
I've read the fuel smell in the cabin thread and have been pretty diligent about chasing down all suspect. In the process I'm replacing 26 year old hoses that looked funky if perhaps still functional.
The car is an 86 Carrera coupe with the AC completely deleted, heat backdate, Heat Blower and CC have also been completely deleted so working on the top of the engine back is pretty easy. I've changed everything suspect in the front, the hoses for the carbon canister up front, both very frayed and brittle, the hoses for the expansion tank near the filler neck and even the big diameter filler rubber hose as well as the 3 inch long hose from the gas tank to the fuel pump. While down there, an inspection of everything else looked good with nothing weeping or suspect. I've reduced the smell by 75% I'd say. As most threads with this complaint go, the smell is only noticeable in the AM after the car has sat with the windows closed overnight. There is now the question of the rear carbon canister shown in the diagram which I'm seeking help/confirmation with. The canister has the snorkle and the hose going to the back end of the air intake box, but the line going to the fuel tank is completely missing. My mechanic told me to look for a small diamerter hose on the left side of the engine compartment and that would need to be connected to the canister. So here are some pictures, I'd appreciate some feedback. The one arrow shows the hose I find back in the section my mechanic told me to look in. There is also another hose that's been clipped and plugged which I don't know what it is or where it went but it's the same type of hose, so I'm a little worried that I'm not finding the right hose to connect to the canister. ![]() Here's a handy diagram showing the charcoal canister in question, again in my situation the middle line labeled "to fuel tank" is completely missing. ![]() Here is the disconnected hose I do find, and a question on the hose stub that's been plugged up, that I've no clue what it did or where it went. |

Bumpity bump. I'm hoping to get this repaired in the next day or two, so any insight would be appreciated.

maybe post what fuel and emissions hoses you have NOT replaced
then there is the possibility of a crack in one of the 3 tanks that you did not find b/c you did not flex the tank while examining it with a scanning electron microscope |

Blow some air with a compressor through the open line and see where it goes.
