An Oily Evening!!!

My remote Oil T-Stat has had a slow drip since I got the car. I believed the PO's mechanic strippped a few threads when he did an R&R.

Needless to say, lots of heat, big wrenches, bruised knuckles and some foul language and I had a totally useless t-stat with 2 unsaveable connectors on it in my hand on Monday night. (I was right about the PO)

Ordered a new one and it showed up tonight courtesy of UPS.

Here is where I get crazy... I pulled the oil lines, trombone cooler and all, sealed it up, applied a leaky 100psi and heated them with mapp gas and removed the PO's flat spots from improper jacking. (worked slick)

Then I installed my new Mocal cooler in the front fender, re-installed the lines, installed the new t-stat, put everyting back together lowered the car and topped up the oil I lost in the lines and during the rest of the work.

Start time, 7:00 pm, finish time including clean up 02:30 am. 7.5 hrs total

I'm sore and tired, but it's done.... Gotta love my mid-rise lift though, wouldn't have been finished tonght without it... Hello long weekend!

Thanks, I think the worst part was spending 2 hours picking and scraping the aluminum out of the threads of the line coupler nuts!

I'm in the middle of this procedure. Had a leaking oil line from T stat to engine, P blasted the nut at T stat and when it released took the first 3 rows of threads off ! There were/ are 3 rows of threads left so I bought the fitting pelican sells for this problem.
In doing searches on this topic I found a thread where another pelican gave this fitting a try with success so I thought I was good to go and avoid buying a new T stat

Well, you have one shot at getting it right with the fitting and botched threads. The fitting made of aluminum (should be brass or?) will probably end up in same condition as factory aluminum threads on the T stat anyway.

So I gave it a shot, red loctite and screwed the fitting on the last few rows of threads, torqued down and let it marinate over night.

Next day warmed the car up and the fitting/T stat leaked

Off it came and on will go a new T stat (found one on an online auction site for 340 shipped)

I should have followed the advice of several pelican who said don't waste your time trying to save the buggered threads and buy new....

Live and learn!

All I can say is what were they thinking? dissimilar metals exposed to the road and no anti-seize... I put a good coat of anti seize on them for the future. Might be another 34 years, but those couplings will come apart!
