Any tricks for removing axle nut?

Hi guys,

Starting in on my rear bearing/CV boot adventure. I bought a very long 1/2" breaker bar and a 1/2" 30mm socket. Holy cats is that bolt on there!! Any tricks for removing? The car is in gear, e-brake on, wheels on the ground. I wonder if I'll wind up breaking the joint on this breaker bar?

Mark.

Put a few feet of pipe on the bar, yes it's really on there that tight.

You need to get an extension on that breaker bar. I used my floor jack handle and it still took alot of pressure to break the nut free.

Never mind! I just went out and (carefully!) jumped on the end of the breaker bar and got both nuts to break loose :)

I snapped a 1/2" breaker bar, moved onto a 3/4" with a 4' piece of black pipe from Home Depot to get enough leverage. That thing is on there TIGHT!!!

torquing to the correct value when re-assembling is also a challenge. You will need a length of pipe, depending on your weight, to reach proper torque. I believe it's ~340 ft-lbs.

Did the same when i tried undoing mine, as others here have said, those nuts realy are that tight, use a 3 quarter bar at least and a long piece of pipe, they will evenutualy let go, make sure your hands are clear of anything that may come in contact when it lets go.
Good luck.:)

You may want to cover the socket and extention with a heavy cloth/rug in case the socket breaks and goes airborne!
We put a ding in a SC fender trying to remove a spring plate adjustment bolt.

I think a few others have just gone to a shop with a powerful impact wrench and had them break them loose then snug back up for the drive home where they could be removed without having to risk serious injury.

IMHO, a hand job is better than an air tool....
