'80 SC has rough idle when cold
Hi all,
I've been lurking for a while and decided to join in with my first post. My '80 SC has been idling rough lately when the engine is cold. It sort of struggles at 700- 800 rpm and feels on the verge of dying. After 10 minutes or so it warms up and idles perfectly smooth at about 1000 rpm. This is starting to become a problem now that it's getting hot here in Texas and running the A/C is only making the problem worse. I replaced the fuel and air filters thinking that might help, but it made no difference. Does anyone have any thoughts?

The first things I would check are: vacuum leak and the warm-up regulator. Could be that your CIS boot or hoses are old and worn, for instance. Does the car die when you take off the oil filler cap with the engine running, for instance? I think that's one of the first signs of a vacuum leak. Maybe someone else knows some other checks that dont require expensive equipment? I think I've read of using an atomizer on the board as well.

To acuratley diagnos what is happening you need a CIS fuel pressure tester, and one of the Bosh fuel injection books. About $100 combined. Or you could take it to a shop.
Otherwise you're just throwing parts at it hoping it will fix it (which I have done) & it gets expensive. |
