Polish or chrome Fuchs
I am refinishing 7 & 9 Fuchs for a "pleasure" Guards Red Cabriolet.
I previously chromed a set of 6&7s w/ red inserts and chrome paddles using Wheel Enhancement. The decision for chroming was made based on them being easier to clean. They are very bling. The car does look good except for the flat 6s in front; due to this I bought a set of 7&9s that need refinishing. I could minimize my upcoming costs by just chroming the new 9s and moving the current 7s from the rear to the front. The main question is would you bite the bullet and instead of chroming the 9s, would you polish the 7&9s? I would then try to sell the new red and chrome 6&7s to offset the cost. I realize this is a vanity question but this car is not for the track. I would also like to hear a bit from the chrome crowd how do they feel? This car is a long termer quasi garage queen.

Well you could chrome them and just use black trim around the pedals. I hated mine when I bought the car, but they have grown on me. Seeing a car the same color with black fuchs just sealed it for me. I'm keeping them.

Never chrome the Fuchs. You're not driving an Escalade.

Is this a joke? Use the search feature and your question will be answered...over and over and over again.

If you subject a perfectly good set of Fuchs to chrome-plating, you are officially subject to banning from this BBS.

Man this is a tough forum!
-Polishing is the way to go though, plus if you were to chrome 2 of your new rims you'll end up with 2 half sets that don't match-which is a tough sell. I think you will find buyers for chromed 6 and 7's with red inserts, it's likely the one color that may attract a few to that kind of stuff. |

Most people will tell you that chroming Fuchs is not a good idea as it seems to lead to premature metal fatigue. The chrome is nice for day to day low maintenance, but if damaged, you're looking at having to re-chrome them. Polished finish is more maintenance, but isn't too bad if you do a little polish regularly. You can also sand and buff out mild damage from rocks, etc. As Scooter "suggested", do a search. LOTS of discussion for your perusal here! And oh, BTW, welcome!

I just bought my 85 Targa on Superbowl Sunday, Guards Red with the Chromed Fuchs. To be honest, I'm not sure if I like them yet. They've grown on me a little, but I do like the stainless rings with the black inset better. I may have them sent out to be redone.

WNSCG - nice car - are you sure those are chromed? Most are actually polished, and you can tell by rubbing them with polish and if the rag turns black they are polished. The problem with chrome is not the look, but the process damages the wheel.

Well, I just tried your suggestion. I rubbed chrome polish on one of the paddles and part of the ring. When I wiped it off, the rag was somewhat black. So I guess this means they're polished. Does this make it easier to change the color, back to black on the paddles and inset?
Thanks for the tip.

I am always surprised at the number of people who think they have chrome fuchs on their cars. There are many different ways of refinishing these wheels but the least appealing and highest maintenance would be to chrome them. There are numerous threads on various fuchs finishes and I don't think I saw many chrome. Why is it that people want to chrome plate fuchs, it basically destroys the value and makes them look like shlt.

I don't disagree with your viewpoint. The person I bought the car from told me the Fuchs were chrome, and having very little knowledge in this area, I had no reason to disbelieve him. That being said, the fact the Fuchs were chromed (or not) almost caused me to not buy the car, as I'm not a fan of the way they look. What caused me to think they were chrome (before JBO's response) was the rings are pitting or flaking and I thought that only happened to chrome. If they are indeed polished and not chrome, I hope it will be easier to change them to the classic style I love, which is the brushed stainless rings and entire black inset and paddles.

Polish or Chrome
First...Thanks. I am new to the board. Given the board's collective knowledge I would have never chromed the original wheels. My road to pelican knowledge was not direct. I do not want to make the same mistake twice.
Next time I will use the search feature first. I do like the interactiveness of this because it tends to have more give and take specific to my concern. What do you think the value is on the Chromed and red 6&7s?

Check out these polished 9's I recently picked up. The looks like the chrome with none of the downside and the maintenance is no big deal - labor of love!
Not th epic I was looking for but you get the idea - bling!

NEITHER! Real men finish their Fuchs like this (or at LEAST anodize).
The good doctor would never approve something so **flashy**

Polished and painted 3 years ago by Al Reed (7's and 9's). Very little maintenance to keep them this way if you wash and wax them periodically:
