2.7 Owners, Post you dyno numbers!

Mine-
stock displacement and C/R (a 1975 S engine 8.5 C/R)
Polished heads and pistons
reground cams
Boat tail and fully updated modded case
CIS
Home made exhaust
a few other things that would have nothing to do with HP
155 HP and 155 torq. @ 5500RPM (rear wheels of course)

Nothing special Factory engine Nothing up front
why?
I did get rid of 5 blade fan and all the exhaust crap...runs up to 210 deg. on hot days.
BUT..if I remember right thats when this oil stat opens...I tested it on hot water once.

I was curious because I have a 76, stock 2.7 as far as I know, with performance which should be about the same as what your dyno shows. Mine runs about 220 to 230 degrees on warm days, hotter on hot days, as high as 250. For that reason I have been looking at mounting an external oil cooler in the front fender per the 911 SC or Carrera fender mount cooler. You don't have the same temps that I do so I am wondering why. Maybe my thermostat is not opening all the way and the engine mounted cooler is adequate if working properly? Or maybe my gauge is incorrect and I am running a little cooler than what it says? I thought most people who ran the 2.7 found it necessary to mount an external cooler. That is why I asked you what you have.

I've heard mixed reviews about the external oil coolers on 2.7s. I'm looking at the trombone cooler but the $$ bit are the lines.

Need to dyno my car some time as well. No idea what im running

I did do all the case mods possible bypass, cam restricters, and stuff. I cant even remember now.
New Carrera oil pump.

Sorry, but I would just freak out if this were my car. In fact it was my car and I have a trombone cooler on my 1977.

I had to re-index my distributor to do it, but I changed my ignition timing, got it right and it lowered my temps a whopping 30 degrees.

I would check your timing first, it's the cheapest easiest thing on the check list.

You are right about the ignition timing. Getting it right dropped the temps about 30 degrees to where they are now. What's next on the checklist? I am guessing that checking the engine thermostat is on the list somewhere.

Yes, 11 blade fan and the same pulley as with the 5 blade. Thermal reactors, smog pump, air lines are gone. Every little bit helped to lower the temps. As I say, I have no idea what has been done to the motor. I found receipts for balancing the engine in the glove box, done in 1993. The previous owner was dead and his widow had no idea about the car. The previous owner claimed he had the engine modified but he never told me how. From what he described and the piston/connecting rod balancing, he may have had oversized pistons/cylinders installed. It may be a different setup on the 2.7 case. It was originally a California car. I tried calling the numbers on the receipts and the businesses were no longer there. Any ideas are gratefully accepted. My plan is to add an external cooler but I think it would be smart to test the internal engine thermostat for proper opening temp. If I can I will get the car dyno done and let you know what it shows.

If you are brave i am told that you can Mod it to 2.9 -but is risky on a mag case as the shoulder area is already a weak spot

Recently I have been curious about 2.7 temps too... ELEPHANT RACING Tech Topic, Oil Temperature and Engine Life

210 is the high end of normal operation temp. I would double check your gauge is reading right...and then still add additional cooling.

a front fender cooler is marginal over 75 mph on very hot desert runs otherwise I ran 190-200F on a 20 mile 90 mph run north of Austin Nevada on Hy 305 when ambient is 70F

imo a stock 2.7 distributor on a stock engine can run 5 degrees advanced with the vacuum retard disconnected and plugged

when my engine was stock, with the front cooler, I ran a dual CHT gauge on cylinders 2 & 5. Those two cylinders are a few degrees from the coldest and hottest cylinders. The CHT reacts immediately unlike oil temps that take a few minutes to heat up. The CHT increase will give a heads up on what your oil temps will soon be doing. IMO it's better to modify your gearing [5th into 4th] or circumstances before oil temps rise so you don't have to go through the aggravation of bringing your oil temps down.


and HP is unknown except with the 2.7 gearing it runs stronger than a 3.2 with stock 1984-88 gearing... see signature for engine mods

an issue is top piston ring temps.
Oil temps should be around 180F for best temps. If higher I would consider a good synthetic to prevent carbon build up on pistons from using standard oils

Those stats are as manufactured as far as I know but I don't know off hand what years had what type of induction/fuel delivery/cams etc.

I can guess at what years had MFI/CIS/Webbers but I will have to go research that and update the list. I still think it is useful for comparison as people post dyno #'s for there modified 2.7's to see where they stand (assuming that the numbers are true reflections of what kind of power these motors make) I also don't know how they rated the h.p. in published data (at the wheels? gross hp?) anyone care to chime in?
