how to get to outer cv joint circlip?

hi everyone! i'm new here, i've just bought an '82 911SC and i'm doing a bit of work on it so i can get it regitsered.
anyway i'm replacing an outer cv boot going by the tech article on here, and i'm trying to do it without remvoing the inner cv joint from the gearbox if possible, mainly to save getting dirt or anything inside it.

anyway i've unbolted the outer flange and cv joint, but i cant seem to be able to get to the circlip on the end of the axle, do i need to unbold the gearbox side of the axle too and take the whole axle out? or is there another way? such as, could i possibly just unblot the bottom of the shock to move it out the way then swing the cv joint out to the point where i can reach the circlip?

thanks for any help!!

nevermind! i took my own advice and unbolted the bottom of the shock and pushed it up(compressed it), and that left just enough room to swing the cv joint out to wheere i could access it!
