Broken Exhaust Stud tool- any lenders? Irvine, SoCal, LA, Orange?
Can anyone PLEASE please please please lend me an exhaust stud removal tool found here?
I have four broken studs I need to change out and I would prefer not to spend $270 on a fancy anodized tool I'm not going to use that much. I would be extremely appreciative. If you need an exchange or something until I return it, I can give you one of my fuchs or something. Thanks, -P

Packy - I would recommend that you buy a set of reverse drill bits. Use a punch to mark the center of the stud, then drill with a small reverse bit - smaller than the stud size. Once you remove some material from the center of the stud and the bit really begins to bite as it gets a little deeper, it may spin out. Most of corrosion that snapped the stud is above the surface of the block. You just need to take your time, use a variable speed drill and stop if you feel like you are too close to the block.

Obviously my 944 is much different than a 911 but here is how I pulled a broken exhaust stud from my 944. This was a difficult job because I had 2" of clearance from the manifold to the inner fender (barely room for my hands, let alone tools).
Anyway, the tool that I made from a piece of steel served the exact same purpose of the tool you have a link to - but mine cost me about $5 bucks. Hope this helps a little.......Vern Broken Exhaust Stud - Fixed :) Photos of My Repair |

2 flush, 1 kinda flush, 1 sticks out. I've done this before so I'm not too worried.

I kind of remember you from a previous thread so all you need is for a good Samaritan to pipe up...

I have just managed to drillout 2 broken inlet studs without any guide. Scared me a bit to start with but if you take it slow, centre punch, then small bit working up to 6.8mm bit, its not too hard. I tapped out the remaining threads left in the hole and have 2 perfectly servicable inlet stud holes.
Its an option if you can't find the guide. |

Use a die grinder to flatten the surface of the stud, center punch, use good quality drill, if you mess up the threads use Helicoil insert. Quite simple actually.

Instead of center punch, if the stud is not broken off flush, I use a cutting disk on a dremel. Hold the drimel at 90 degrees to the face of the stud and cut a shallow slot in the face of the stud.
Turn 180 and cut another slot. Looks like an X. Drill where the cut slots intersect. Gives you a nice, clean center hole. Works for me.
