Vin tag near smugglers box

Hi, is the stamped vin number supposed to be on a raised area like the one in the picture or on flat metal? Do not mistake the rust around the stamped area for welding it is just corrosion. I just a wire wheel to it to try and clean it up.

Thank you for you help!

Thanks,

You can't really learn anything very useful from that number. Porsche can correlate it with a chassis serial number. Depending upon the year of the car, you might find that number stamped in a couple other places and written in grease pencil on the inner door sheet metal and maybe the top of the dash sheet metal. It was a production number used by the factory when building the cars, before a serial number was assigned.

1292308 is broken down like this.

1 is a production body (0 would be a replacement chassis)
2 is for a Karmann produced body (0 is a Porsche coupe, 1 is a Targa, and 3 is Karmann 914/6)
9 is the model year of 1969
2308 is the sequential serial number for this body.

The Karmann bodies also have a number sequence stamped in the rear tunnel opening, although I have never seen this number personally.
