gas tank question

I have to repair the gas tank of my 69. The MTBF has arrived to it's limit. I have been asked $ 350 for a "fidelis" reproduction of the original one but in aluminium. Do you think it worth's the price, if the work is well done ? Any suggestions ? Thanks Ed.

Ed.... I have a 73.5T and am tired of replacing my fuel filter every 2K and seeing more black crude then ever..... I opted for the reproduction as well and will be replacing it shortly. It cost m e $375.00 here. Its alot wiser to go that route for $100-150 more then the POR 15 sealer everyone brags about. Remember that their is a foam gasket under ther tank and undercoat it before installing. Regards Bob

LOL, looks like someone else besides me uses MTBF. I spend about half my working life tracking mean time between failures on over 1200 pieces of machinery. This is the first time I have seen it used with a Porsche though.... Let me guess, you're an engineer? Last edited by sammyg2; 05-13-2002 at 03:58 PM..

Beware of the reproductions! I spent all of Saturday and missed the SD Porsche Get-Together by trying to install a brand new repro gas tank that was a POS. When I found out that I could get a repro tank for about $300, I said "great" -- now I can elimate the tank as a source of problems in the future. What a piece of junk! The tank didn't fit in the chassis right, the filler tube was not aligned correctly, and then after putting the %&^# thing in the car, IT LEAKED! The weld at one of the fittings was not properly done and was dripping fuel from the weld. I had to put the old one back in the car and am shipping the repro back to the supplier (who will remain nameless for the moment) with a demand for a refund. Take your old tank out (not that big of a job, I did it 20 times on Saturday!) and take it to a radiator shop who will boil it out and seal it for you. At least you know it will fit in the car when it is done and won't leak! Rich

Hey you have me scared here Richard!!!!!!!!!! I drove up to PAP outside of Atlanta and bought it there. Its still in the box nice and shiney and never used. I was advised that the repro company was in the USA and that it will be a perfect fit! Please advise where you got your tank........that info you just passed on is golden. Thanks Bob

Bob: I didn't get my tank from PAP, so you might be OK. I am not sure where the tank I bought was manufactured. I would definitely check for fit before doing anything. I assumed it would fit would fit just fine and had taken the time to undercoat mine before installing which (as you can imagine) made the job even less enjoyable. Yuck! Rich

Thanks to everyone for the advises, The man here asked me to bring him the old one as to make the reproduction. Someone in the real way of car collection (Alfas, Lolas,Ferraris (5) and other beauties) refered to him as an "artist", and he also claimed that mine isn't the first 911 tank he has done..... well .... ill find out. Gerald. My MTBF from 30 years in the navy. Lots of control sys.... electronics.... and their replacements.... Thanks again to all of you. Ed.

I did the POR 15 treatment...took appx 1 week and I have had no problems since. The hardest part was the wait...takes over 72 hours for the treatment to cure, and the pre-treatment is pretty time consuming as well. If you decide to go this route, let me know and I can give you a few pointers.
