930 air intake revisited, a little help with theory please.

I am basically done with the design on my intake system and am ready to fire up the lathe and mill except for one detail. On a 930 the bump stop for the sensor plate is on top, right at the point of connection for the intake and the sensor plate housing. Inside the airbox directly above it is a cone shaped diverter that appears to route air to the outer edges of the sensor plate. It will not be a problem to incorpotae this in my design but I am not sure it's neccasary if you know what I mean. I would not be surprised either way as I can understand the idea of not only shiedling the obstruction(bump stop) but also to increase air velocity at the sensor plate. But it is awful small in my opinion to increase velocity much, what do you guys think? The purpose of this project is not for increased performance as I am not that niave however if you have ever worked on one of these cars you understand the issues will this airbox. It is difficult to get to the two screws that attach the unit to the sensor plate housing(and they can strip or crossthread easily, the air box is ass ugly, most are warped at the filter end (mine is sealed to the filter using butyl rubber as the airbox is longer the correct shape to seal to the filter), they are HUGE and cover nearly the entire engine making general maintanence a bastard. My design will eleviate all of these problems and heck it's fun to tinker with stuff like this. So what about that cone?

I just finished several weeks worth of frustration on this same topic.

The result? I modified the stock unit.

The cone you speak of is slightly important. It has an air handling function needed with the stock air filter housing. The ultra-rediculous priced "Power Flow" (HA!) system does not have this cone.

My engine is now finished (finally!), I will post pictures as soon as they come back on disc. I have several pix of the modified bastard box. You are sure right about the UGLY part. One of my biggest goals was to make this engine look better by reducing the junk pile on top of it. I failed miserably.

Mine will use none of the stock box and will be a combination of aluminum and silicone(for the runner). I really think it will work well. I will post pics soon. The biggest improvement is the attachment method I will be using. I plan to eliminate the two long and difficult to access bolts on top with a neat little system if I do say so myself.

Please post a picture and some specs. I really don't want to go with the setup I have. It's just nasty looking.

Hi
I think the cone thing reduces the fluctuations in the sensor plate. I just made an aircleaner housing for my 930 motor. I didn't make a cone for it. My old housing didn't have a cone. Mine is attached with one screw on the side and a bracket on the filter end.
Have fun
Dean
