What's this worth & how to sell?
This '76 Targa has a 1982 3.0 liter engine with about 75K miles. I bought the car in running condition, but all body parts, rubber, mirrors, lights, etc were in boxes. 90% of rubber has been replaced with new. The body was stripped. All parts buffed out, primed, and freshly painted. New carpet. Upholstery - new for seats, side panels, pouches, etc. Dash has no cracks. New Targa top installed. Glass is in very nice shape. Transmission was rebuilt with engine conversion. The tail...came with the car, not my choice. The color is not Porsche, but a Mercedes blue...concession to wife for spending over $30K on project. Car runs fast, tight, and solid. Odometer came stopped at 120K miles. Probably have put 5K on car. Except for the odometer, everything works well. I'd replace the radio/casette...only thing I haven't touched. Body is straight. It is driven very little and sits covered in garage most of the time, so it's time to sell. What's it worth and where is the best place to list?

put it for sale on the cars for sale forum here and as many of the free sites as you can (ebay, cars.com, vehicks, ect.). price? 12-15k. IMO tail and cookie cutters hurt the price. Nice color.

unfortunately I think paint is the one place where you'll spend the most money and get the least value increase on a car, esp. if its a custom color like you've chosen.
Its hard to build a project car that you will ever see the amount of money back that you got into it... If this car was a more desirable color, and had nice fuchs on it I think you could have gotten 16-18K for it But as stated above the cookie cutters hurt the value, and I think the non original color limits the pool of potential buyers as well to people who really really like the color. Although I'm still making my mind up about it... I think with Fuchs on it the color would be really nice, but with the color coded cookie cuters I'm not sure if I like it or not....

15k or so the wheels are the issue if you had fuchs or something diffferent then cookie cutters you would open the pool quite a bit. you should be able to find nice fuchs for your car fittment for $600-800 depending on condition and be able to sell the car for much more then you invested in the wheels

That color and those wheels are going to make that car a tough sell. I think it will be a long, long wait trying to even get $15K out of the car. More like $10K.

It's a mid-year with an engine swap and colour change to an unusual colour. These are a minus to value (maybe not the swap so much but the colour definitely). Targa is a minus to value. Those wheels are a BIG minus to value. Put it on 16" Fuchs replicas and you'll have a better chance to sell. Also try this thread in the "Marketplace" forum as that's where it belongs. Regards, d.

Quite frankly, it's worth more in parts than as a whole car. Still, you could put it on EBay for a month with an optimistic reserve and you might find that one person who wants it for that price. I agree with others that you gotta lose the cookie cutters.

Put it on ebay but don't mention that it is a non standard color, plenty of buyers out there who just want a Porsche and may not be familiar with the factory colors. If a serious buyer asks about the color then you'll need to come clean.
Fuchs would be better but for now you could just paint the wheels back to silver.

I think $10K is about right.
A $12 can of Wurth Silver, some masking tape and a couple hours of time with same will add a lot of value and make the car a lot easier to sell. |
