Help Identifying Please...
 

So I've been having a nice time attempting to rid my 87 Targa of a few rather large mouse residences...yeah, I'm hatin' it. Anyway, one of the nests was inside of the boot area within the passenger side fender wall. The nest was just inside a rather large pass-through hole that has two threaded studs on either side of the hole.

I've been trying to identify what might have, at one time, filled the void and been fastened down using the studs that protrude from this area in the interior fender wall.

Well guys, any ideas?

There are no studs around that hole on my '84 coupe - just an empty hole with a few wires feeding through it. Mine does have a protector on part of the hole to keep the wires from chafing.

on the driver side that hole is used for the fuel filler hose. I suspect the tooling just had the dies set up symmetrically, e.g., for right hand drive cars. The studs were probably by added by a previous owner so a block off plate could be used to seal the hole. my sc doesn't have studs.

On my 87 Carrera coupe the studs are also present, looks exactly like OP's picture.

This is just a wild guess but could the studs have been added by the factory during the period that the "slant nose" was being built. Possibly to anchor the wiring harness or equipment related to the pop up headlights. And if so, the factory could have added the studs to all cars for convenience.

This is the correct answer. I work in the automotive industry and have worked with molds and dies. This is what they do for cars in multiple markets with LH or RH drives. And even in single markets, rather than design a different part, they often just mirror the design over for the opposite side. Saves on design and manufacturing time.

The only thing is...there's no studs on the driver's side where the fill tube passes into the luggage area.

Ok, a guess...maybe the studs were part of the manufacturing process to align in a jig or something....and they were removed when the fuel filler was on that side. Shot in the dark, and I know I'm no Joe Bob ;)

My Cab's an '85, and that is the exact area which had holes drilled through, and an alarm siren mounted. I'm talking a real siren... motor, turbine, sounded like an ambulance from a '50s TV show. It had a Bosch relay and a "flasher" unit to cycle it on/off/on/etc to make it "whoop-whoop" instead of wail, if you get the subtle difference. It's possible that the hole is a nockout for a fender-well mounted loudspeaker for a modern style electronic alarm That'd be MY guess.

Nice thought, Don...maybe I'll install a loudspeaker for tailgating party music. Or better yet, a P.A. To scream at all of the JO's that cut me off during my joy-rides!

The studs are for mounting the vacuum reservoir for the vertcal headlight aim control.
I believe '87 was the first year for this option/feature, of course this was not available in North America so many have never seen one.

I am currently working on an '87 930 with the "M605, Headlamp Vertical Aim Control" option.

Cool... Vertical headlight aim control.... I want that for the ricers with the poorly aimed super bright lights, Just hit a button and make them feel my wrath...... :)
