Help me identify these calipers

Guys,

I have a set of rear calipers that I *thought* were from a 2000-2004 Boxster S (same as 1998-2004 Carrera 2). I asked my wrench to install with them on my '87 Carrera with some 996 NA mounting adapters, and he said they wouldn't fit. He mentioned that the marking for the manufacturing year indicated that these were produced in 1996 and 1997 - a few years before the Boxster S was produced.

As you'll see below, the Porsche casting numbers on these are 996.352.421 (Brembo # 20 6679 01) on the left caliper and 996.352.422 (Brembo # 20 6679 02) on the right caliper. The 996 designation suggests that they're NOT from a 1997-1999 Boxster. But the markings for the manufacturing year suggest they were produced prior to the release of the 996. Can anyone make sense of what car these were originally fitted to? Thanks!

Did you try Google?????????

996.352.421.xx is the left rear from a Boxster S. 996.352.422.xx is the right rear from a Boxster S.

Andy,

If you do a search for brake chart or applications,i'm sure you will find one of Bill Verburg's informational charts with all the P/N's.
I'm sure i came across something to that matter before ...

Cheers !

The part # is for a 1998- 996, according to PET.

I don't know that the two-digit code is year, but it seems reasonable, so let's run with it being that - one is clearly "97", which would be when at least some 98 MY cars were being built - so clearly parts would exist that year. Is the other "98"? It's hard to be 100% sure. If it's "96", I got no answer for you - beyond that it's a 996 part #

What adapters do you have? I do know that at least some rear adapters for 996-to-911 calipers do NOT simply bolt up to the banana arm, they have to be fitted, in the olde-worlde use of the term "fitter" to describe an artisan modifying parts - rather than taking stuff out of a box and bolting it on.

I know one company provide the same adapters for 993, 993TT, 996 and 996TT calipers - at least some combinations of caliper/banana arm need varying degrees of modification of the swing arm and the adapter itself to fit properly.

You offer them up, figure what needs to happen, offer them up again - repeat until they bolt up. Like using engineer's blue to fit a plain bearing.

When properly fitted, they're pretty darned snug - but they can be made to fit. I know my own 996 adapters made two separate trips to the surface grinder, and I seem to recall the dust shield lug was sacrificed to the cause...

Pelican Parts - Product Information: 996-352-421-13-OEM

Here is your part numbers plugged into the Pelican site. The only difference is that there should be 13 at the end of each of your part numbers - maybe they are not always stamped in.

The quantity of paint just glopped over them kinda makes me shudder. Over the pistons, over the fittings.
