What's missing here (fuse panel)? 83 SC Targa

Hi - first time post, incredible community here. I am a new owner, purchased yesterday, drove 100 mi from sellers location and engine quit (super hot in the mid-Atlantic yesterday, heat related?). Everyone says its the fuel pump relay, easy fix, and I am picking up a fresh one in about an hour. While I a waiting...can anyone tell me about the small black relay to the right of the front fuse box? There is a disconnected wire (see photo) but I am not sure if anything needs to be connected. You can also see a disconnected wire that appears to be a ground (with the bare end), what could that be?

Thanks for making a new owner feel welcome!

Welcome to the forum!

That is a not factory relay/wiring set up and could be for anything. You'll need to trace the wires to get an idea of where they go. Do you have any aftermarket devices that you recognize, such as dealer installed A/C?

Nothing original. Aftermarket alarm? I think folks may put in a relay when they upgrade their lights to the H4's (1984 and forward type) vs the SC halogen seal beams but I am not sure. Just have to find out what is not original. Maybe they added a fan aided oil cooler in the passenger side inner fender?

Welcome! This is a good place to spend some time. Check out the tech info center and tech articles pertaining to your car. You can find a lot of good data here.

Welcome to the fun and the forum, and congratulations.

Agreed that relay isn't stock. Just curious - Is that a double/pair wire coming into the picture on the left, and is that a red/black wire that was snipped off of it - or am I seeing things? Could that flying ground lead have gone to it at some point?

Is the RH side of the inline fuse bundled to the + side of the battery in the pic? You might have a hot clip there (if you didn't already remove the fuse).

Make sure everything is dead and then start the search for where they go.

Ah dude, the adventure begins! Garment, I almost envy you. Chasing out aftermarket wiring (and this is decidely aftermarket stuff, probably alarm) is a challenging puzzle, and one that provides its own rewards. Arm yourself with the cheap Haynes at the very least, and better off to get the Bentley Manual, and you'll have more satisfying fun than you can imagine. Access to a decent chiropractor for after some activities might be a plus!
