Porsche Facility in Charleston, SC??
Well, I'm back from a week in Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. Really neat places, particularly the architecture. Restaurants were incredible!!!
Unfortunately, 200+ e-mail's were awaiting my return....... ![]() Anyway, while returning the rental car to Charleston International Airport, I saw a large tan building with red, lighted Porsche lettering. Behind the guarded gate were quite a few Porsche's under cover. The facility looks to be slightly "hidden," as it's on airport (or right on the edge of) property, nestled in the woods, back on a small road that leads to the rental car return area at the airport. Anyone know what this is?

I may be mistaken but I think that Charleston, SC is the east coast destination for factory deliveries. LA is the west coast. I know the airport is sort of far outside town. I would have expected the cars to be closer to the port.
I agree, that is a beautiful area of the country. Jamie

SeaDweller, did you eat at the seafood restaurant in downtown Charleston? Some of the best seafood that I've ever put into my mouth.

Yep, Charleston is the east coast Port of Embarkation and that facility is about the best guarded place next to Fort Knox!
I believe Jacksonville, Florida was the prior location but acid fallout from that lovely Paper Mill (Kraft Plant) forced alot of folks out because of paint damage. For those who are reading this and never ventured to Charleston it is one of the largest and greatest historic districts in the country. Is a fantastic place to visit and if the antebellum stuff gets boring right on the Cooper River sits the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier and a bunch of neat submarines, destroyers and other stuff to tour. Its some of the Porsche owned drivable cars.
The Ports Authority is not far from Meeting St., and when Porsches have just arrived, you will see thousands sitting in the lot. And it is heavily guarded. At other times you will see thaousand s of BMW's there. Guys are paid to do notheing but drive the cars of the ship.
The Porsche building you are talking about is about 20 miles from the Ports Authority and I am told that Porsche has some of their serviced and driving cars there, under covers. I do not know if Porsche executives come down to inspect the shipped cars and drive these cars or what. |

Service yes, parts, no.
If you go I-20, if you have problems on I-20 Doc's Garage, ask for Les. 803-359-6606They handle Porsche and BMW, mostly Porsche.. Very good. In Charleston Rennsport Charleston, Inc. Ask for Stan Turner 843-556-4925.
There are not many parts places for older 911's around here, unfortunatley. We usually go to Atlanta to find parts. If you are downtown Charleston, go by the Ports Authority, just to see all the cars waiting to be trucked out. They come in groups of colors, so you may see 200 white 911's lined up then another color beside that. The wierd thing is they always have the windshield wipers up off of the windshield. Someone has to go through the thousands of cars and rasie these wipers. Looks funny. |

Glad you got to see the Porsches in Charleston, they won't be there for long. They are shutting down on May 31st, 2002
Porsche has decided to move the East Coast port of entry to Brunswick Georgia and Baltimore, Maryland...closer to their biggest customer base. read all about it, http://www.crbj.com/articles/2002/03252002/Porsche%20departure%20sparks%20renewed%20concerns. htm

BRUNSWICK GEORGIA!!!!!!!!!???????
I used to live and work in that mill town...... Its got the Hercules toxaphene plant, Brunswick Paper and Pulp Plant and air quality that would kill even Spider Man!! I cannot believe Porsche is letting that port to be used for embarkation considering the acid mist and stench that permeates everything! Charleston was perfect.................. Someone must have really gone far to entice Porsche to come to southern coastal Georgia. Bob
