Fuel won't pump easily into gas tank
New 911 owner here.... picked up a nice '87 Coupe and have had trouble at two different gas stations and 3 different pumps trying to fill my gas tank. The gas pump repeatedly pumps and stops, pumps and stops, pumps and stops, as if the tank is full when I know it's not. Takes a good 10 minutes to fill the tank.
I'm hoping this is one of those "normal problems" that happens over the years as they age. So what should I check? Is there some sort of valve to relieve the gas pressure while pumping that may be blocked? Is there some sort of baffle in the filler neck that may have jostled loose? Car was well maintained so it's not a rust bucket that's been sitting for years. Kinda annoying to fill her now. Thanks, Chris |

Yeah, that. Put the handle in backwards. A tad awkward but it works.

Ah, tried everything BUT that way. Since 911's are new to me, I figured there must something wrong... the car is 25 yrs old now.
I'll go burn off a few gallons and try it again, upside down! -Chris |

Picked up my 79SC in LA and drove home to Albuquerque. First gas stop was not pretty. Would only take gas at a veryyyyy slow rate and maybe 15 minutes to fill with a lot of gas on the ground. Turns out that the gas filler was rusted out and would not take hardly any gas in a quick manner and left a big puddle so I always backed away from the pump :=). Works well now with a new filler neck.

One additional suggestion while fueling with the nozzle upside down. While pumping gas, use care with positioning the fuel hose that goes from the nozzle handle to the fuel pump. If you have an older 911 with the manual radio mast, it is located a few inches from the filler door on the drivers side fender, and the fuel hose will snap a raised radio mast with great ease. Don't ask me how I know.
PS: If you have an electric radio mast, it is located on the front passenger fender and it should not be at risk while pumping.

The restrictor in the filler neck is different than a newer car. It doesn't allow the fuel nozzle to go in far enough, also the flow doesn't go as well with the nozzle right side up. The upside down trick works great. You can also pull back the vapor recovery collar by hand while you fill, that will keep the nozzle from shutting off all the time.

I just put mine about halfway in and then it'll take the full amount everytime.
That sounds bad......

Maybe some of your favorite lube will help ease insertion?!
