Electric AC compressor???

I know this is from left field and people would say "why not just use a belt driven AC unit like everyone else". So ... Has anyone ever rigged up or know of a dc motor driven electric AC compressor that can be used in a porsche? I know the amperage load would be pretty heavy. Maybe something jut to take the heat down to a more comfortable level like 70 deg. Just curious. Removed the ac from my 86 carrera and while driving around today in the cobra it was pretty hot ... thinking its probably going to be hotter in a coupe even with the windows down. I dont like the idea of 30 ft of hose running fore and aft of the car and like the clean look of an AC-less engine compartment. Like I said ... Just curious and not trying to reinvent the wheel.

Its been done, more so in hybrids. Think of the objective in terms of required BTU's or Watts

I've seen the Sanden version, it's massive and the efficiency is marginal. If you've ever ridden in an EV like the Leaf the AC is anemic at best.

The A/C in our MH is about 12-15,000 BTU and runs just fine on a 2500W (~3.5HP) PSW inverter using 2 6 volt golf cart batteries. About a 1000W running, >2000W for initial startup.

MH?? Looks like there is nothing very efficient on the market. Getting into the re-engineering the wheel range. Thanks guys for the info. I guess Ill try running with no AC. If its terrible then I guess Ill just come back to the proven route and run OEM. Nothing can ever be simple and clean, .

Motor homes are mainly heat pumps are they not? That's not exactly going to work under the hood of a 911.

I think MH = Motor Home?

I have thought about this too - would be so nice if there was a unit that could be snapped under the dash and then removed at the track or in the winter. Kind of like a big sub woofer box :-). I dont know how you would deal with the condensation but it seems like there would be a solution.

Here in Atlanta just taking the edge off the humidity would be soooo nice, but I hate the complex mess that AC systems are in an otherwise pretty simple car. I guess too I have a block because I cant and dont want to work on them ;-)

There are few challenges in adapting this style of ac cooling system in the 911.
1) The average battery cranking amps is 850. The alternator output is 95 amps at best. The stock vehicle electrical system won't support the load.
2) The compressor is not designed for banging on/off loads.
3) The heat radiant gain in the 911/930 is much higher than a motor home or 'normal' sedan.
