Produced 1/65-7/65. 3154 made in that timeframe. Came in a 1965 911. Nothing special.

I think that is the Tom Jones modification. It's not unusual.

Not rare, but it does have some value as it qualifies for FIA vintage races in Europe. Also, as prices of 65's have jumped lately, this could bump the value of a 65 that has a non-1965 motor in it.

Well, it is actually a 1966 model year engine circa Nov 1965. It will have the aluminum crankcase which is a little more desirable than an early magnesium case due to greater strength. It will not have some of the updates that came with the later versions of the mag case however. The value will depend strongly on the completeness and condition.

That is because the Red Book uses the factory information which only states the numbers from the CALENDAR year 1966. The factory never defined the start of the 1966 model year which generally starts in August and this has lead to a lot of confusion as to what is a 1965 and what is a 1966 911 or 912. Taking away 5 months of 1966 model year production built in calendar year 1965 really skews the model year production figures. For 1967 the factory did define the model year change, and beginning in 1968 the VIN's, engine and transmission serial numbers were all coded with the model year.

Saw this on early 911 registry:
WTB: 1966 911 Engine Case I'm looking for a '66 911 engine case. Will consider long blocks and complete motors, too. Don't care what number as long as the case is in good, re-usable condition. Please PM me details or email me at TLG_Porsche@yahoo.com Thanks in advance! |
