Bill, this won't work on a 1987. Box cover and motor mounting changed in 1986. I talked with Rock (owner of Retroair) about this during last year's sweaty season!

I am not unhappy about the volume of air CFM that comes through the vent, I just with it could be about 20 degrees colder. This after installing a new drier and converting to 134a (it was just air before, now it is cool air). The little resistor knob? Seems to have zero effect on the temperature.

I know Griffiths sells a variable speed fan control that doesn't limit you to three speeds, and I think it will work on the later model cars. I haven't seen any other products to increase the fan motor size or speed for the later model cars, however. You might give Charlie Griffiths or Ron Maxwell at Rennaire a call and see what they have to say about increasing the motor size. Also, several people (Jim Sims, Hugh R., and others) have installed a muffin fan over the resister pack in the passenger floorboard. Apparently the extra airflow into the evaporator helps with cooling. HTH Scott

jeffrey, the knob controls the frequency of the compressor clutch engagement. I found that the best ac cooling occurs on even freeway cruising at about 70mph because the compressor is spinning at about 2500 rpm and the motor is not throwing out much heat. I wonder if you have dirty evaporator fins? I get 42F vent temps on a 80-85F dergree day. | ||

I just went to a computer surplus place and bought three 12V muffin fans (DC of course) and screwed them into the front of the evaporator inlet behind the passenger floor board. My car didn't have A/C from the factory, so my ventilation system is very different. The A/C was an aftermarket add on, which I converted to R-134a. BTW the fans cost about $2 each. Here's a pic. Also, I don't have the bowtie thingie and the only intake to the evaporator box is the one you see. I think other 911s with factory air have another intake for the A/C. BTW. I get A/C air from my top, center and underdash vents, I think most of our vintage 911s get it from the center vents only. I also don't get squat for air velocity from the vents.

Thanks for the responses. Let me restate my question. I want more velocity/cfm out of my vents, this will come at the expense of some cooling as the air will spend less time at the evaporator but I'm guessing it will be a trade off as the more air will be hitting me in the face. So is there an an existing motor / squirrel cage that would fit with some modifications? BTW, ScottB how's that additional condenser?

Bill, It seems to me that these inlet fans would increase the throughput of your system and are a relatively easy modification.

The latest mod being considered is to install a rear fenderwell condenser in front of the left rear wheel, away from the exhaust system. If I ever have to do work on my system and have the R12 evacuated, I think that's the next step I'm going to take. Scott

I have the Kuel variable speed fan controller on my '89 3.2 - I was trying to both improve the velocity and also be able to better control the fan noise. The product works well for both. Regards, David.

David: Was the installation of the variable speed control difficult?
