Heat, who cares

...it's in the 100's and I'm pulling the AC out of my '83 sc. I've decided what I want to do with the car.
I purchased the car in Oct 11 and have drive about 6K miles.
It's bone stock and original.
Everything I remove to lighten it up I'll safely save as is but it is going to get RS door panels, everything easily removed...back seats etc, console, ..removed.
I've been driving with the windows down in 105 and I found out I don't melt.
I will not do any mods that can't be reversed.
At 221K miles she still runs really well but I'll do a rebuild on her early next year and do the interior myself.
Stripped down basic Porsche.
I have a friend with a local auto repair/paint business that will repaint the hood, bumper (hundreds of small paint chips..actually 221 K's worth) and retain as much of the original paint.... as possible even the slightly discolored (from engine heat) rear hood as I like the patina.
I'll remove the huge rear bumper blocks but not sure about the side lower valances. Not sure if I'll go with dif bumpers or not...the alloy is pretty light as is.
Suggestions on lightening her up?
I'm not sure about any cam upgrades for the rebuild as I will drive it a lot and want the longevity the SC's have....any suggestions/experiences would be appreciated.

I grew up in Alaska. I melt WAY before 100°...
I still took the AC out though.

I've been told that the sound deadening under the back seats weighs about 26 pounds. I know that may be outside you "no mods that can't be reversed" edict but there are a number of sound deadeners that are easy to put in and considered an upgrade.

I thought you were going to talk about getting rid of the heat exchangers... it's 47 degrees this morning North of Seattle on June 24th!!!
I need heat exchangers, AC... not so much.

To answer your question, I definitely care - driving is much more enjoyable to me with the a/c blowing cold!

Really, didn't know that and that's still a reversible mod....lots of lightweight modern stuff to replace it with.
Anyone confirm the weight of the sound deadener?

I can confirm it's at least that much weight. I took it all out a few months ago. Replacing it with a layer of Damplifier and 1/4" closed cell foam over that.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

Thanks, good to know and I'll strip it out. I use 1/8 " closed cell foam with alluminum backing and a sticky side. Comes in 12"x 15 ' lengths. I buy it a Home Depot for 16 bucks and it works exactly like the expensive stuff for heat/sound. Reduced the firewall temp on my Hot Rod by 40 degrees. I always spray the xtra strong 3m adhesive on vertical surfaces over the sticky side....the stuff is actually ducting insulation.

You know, this is just another example of Porsche A.G. “missing the boat’.
We, as owners, don’t always want the ‘luxuries’; light-weight (911R-like) can count for more.
Too bad Porsche doesn’t follow the ideas of their ‘founding father’.

My philosophy has always been: “If it isn’t there it didn’t cost anything, doesn’t weigh anything and can’t malfunction.”

Best,
Grady

So I guess the 911 would have been better had it been offered without an engine - Fred Flintstone power all the way!?

I recommend 964 profile cams. They actually will improve the power across the band.

Also, you appear concerned about keeping the car original or modifications reversible. I don't think an 83SC is anything special. You should do to it what you please and not worry about bringing it back to stock.

There are several weight saving / loss threads on the board where guys pulled out stuff and weighed everything meticulously. That will give you a good idea for the best bang for your effort. Best bang for the buck isn't really applying here, as many things can be removed without having to replace them - free weight savings!

True. What I meant was I'll not modify/weld/cut anything. Short of that everything is replaceable.
Just the rear eng bay ac components and smugglers box unit weighed 46.3 lbs.

My SC was 2570 with a half tank of gas and a spare tire. I had removed the a/c, stock seats, seat backs, center console, engine bay sound deadening, complete a/c, SSI and dansk, heat backdate. No work to bumpers, bumper shocks, sheet metal etc. And that was with a DAS roll bar and 6 point harnesses in both seats.

Since quite a few closed race cars are now sporting air conditioning, and since we are at 106 here today I beg to defer. It's so much nicer to go for a drive when your brain isn't getting cooked.

Droped the AC...all total 66.5 lbs. Now I'm motivated to seek slim. The interior looks so much more Porsche to me without the console.

Getting there. Weighed the car today and 2800 lbs, wet 3/4 tank and me in it @170 lbs....so about 2630...I'm devising some window pulls so I can gut the doors of motors etc.....I'm using nylon straps and the pinch lock used on tie down straps....on the RS doors......
Fun once you get started.
Man, the AC on a Porch has more plumbing than a ship.

Man, you guys were right on that rear insulation...that stuff is heavy....I didn't weigh it yet but the two seperate pieces (came out nicely and complete) seem to be more that 26 lbs.
I replaced it with 1/8 " closed cell foam backed by aluminum....what I used only weighed 3 lbs. and covered the same area.
The little extra mechanical and road noise is excellent btw.

the a/c is the first thing i ripped out ! but im in NY . Im building my 914 trying to keep it light. I have a greenlee knock out punch kit that is coming in handy lol but there is alot more parts on the 911 that can easily be tossed or replaced with something lighter
