Magnesium 915 with 78-up clutch cable?
Can the earlier Magnesium 915s, specifically 1976, but updated to accept the Aluminum cased clutch cable?
Im wondering if all the little bits and pieces like the cable, omega spring...maybe even updated fork...etc would it work or is this a road probably best not traveled?

Just need to swap out the vertical release fork shaft, which is longer at the bottom, and add an aftermarket bracket to the two lower side cover studs to hold the later cable. There is also another factory bracket on the side cover for the omega spring pivot and stop for the long release arm. May need to notch the lower rib to clear the cable bracket. Engine out to do the shaft of course. Then all that's missing is the tit that holds the return spring for the short arm.

Or just run it with one of the other clutch arms. I don't like the one where the cable curves 90 degrees around the end and then through a hole where the adjusting nut is. The ones which just need an aluminum V shaped block with a hole in the middle for the threaded cable end are simple.
Fabricating a support for the bracket to hold the end of the cable housing is not difficult. |

Thanks for all the input! Will be attempting this in the next couple of weeks. on a parts gathering mission at the moment.

Why would u want to do this. Are u putting an early gearbox in a later car. Back date the clutch cable. If u update the release mechanism u will have to cut out the existing cable support with the hole in it. Walts picture in post #3 shows the reverse, going from late omega spring setup to early cable. The cable support area for early cables is missing in late gearboxes and has to be fabricated.

I'm pretty sure my 77 (mag case) is using the updated arm/omega spring, from the factory, so I'd guess yes.

Just want to hit this thread as I have a 77 mag with Omega that I want to backdate. Other than bolting on Wevo piece or fabricate something for cable and getting older style arm, is there anything else needed?

A cable for a 915 suitable for the arm. Not the one for the 911 tranny. Not the one for the arm where the cable bends 90 degrees around the arm (also too long). I think the '76 cable, which is just before the Omega spring was introduced. My August 76 '77 model had that cable and it was the right length, or close enough.
When properly adjusted the Omega system works pretty well, though. |
