idle rough after distributor cap replace

Its been at least 10,000 miles since I replaced the distributor cap and rotor on my '78 SC. It though was running great, just took it out for a drive earlier today. it always starts right up

still -- preventattive maintenance and all I decided to replace those two items it this evening. I *thought* I was careful in transfiering the wires from one cap to the other, tried to start it and it wouldn't start at all -- checking the wires, I realized I did indeed mix a couple up.

argh... figuring I'd go back to square one just in case to eliminate as many variables as I could, so , I put the old cap and rotor back on -- this time triple checking the order 1,6,2,4,3,5. Made sure each boot was tight, double checked the vacuum tube on the distributor

turned over, after a little coaxing it started, ran rough, I turned it off- looked around again, checked the wires again.. let it sit for a 15 minutes while I got drink out of the fridge. Started it again.. it ran a little better, rough but would hunt for an idle then finally died after about 40-sec.

its after 8p now, I am thinking I'll take a fresh look at it again in the morning. Any ideas?

Do you remember the SC turns bassackwards than the other Porsche motors? The Bentley manual has it wrong. It goes counter clockwise.

78 911SC ignition rotor rotation

Pull the cap, rotate engine to Z1, the rotor will pony to number one plug on the cap...when it's back on. Then go 6,2,4,3,5 from right to left.....
