My New Wheels

Lilly has acquired some new wheels. They are a little more her size - the 7+9x17s weren't quite right. Now I have no more rubbing, and the handling seems as great as ever. The ride is even a bit smoother.
While I liked the Cups wheel enough, I think she looks a little more like an early* Porsche ought to - there's a certain amount of tire that 16's show and 17's don't.

*I know 1979 isn't "early", but its older than me!

Wow, looks surprisingly good. I've never been a fan of the D90s, but somehow they work on your targa.

Congratulations on a new set of wheels! Maybe we can meet up halfway at I-94 and have coffee one sunday morning.

Once I get my wheels next week, I'll test it. So time to look for a new home for my 16 Fuchs.

Thanks everyone!
My wife and I took her for a drive last night out into the countryside away from Milwaukee. After having the car on jacks for 2 weeks, I had been pining for some night open air driving, and an hour and a half romp on winding woodsy roads through the fading dusk was just the ticket.

It was 108 when I left work at 4, but speeding through fields with the wind in your hair and the sunset all around sure takes your mind off the heat.

That would be fun. We head down that way from time to time to see family.

d90s look good on your car...did you have to do anthng (adaters etc.) to put them on or are they a direct fit?

Thanks! An SC has "early offset", so the axle doesn't stick out as far as on "late offset" Porsches. The D90's were made for a late offset Porsche. As a result, I had to put spacers in to extend the axles for the wheels to fit. I used 1" on the front and 2" on the back. I could have gone a little shorter on the back - if I bought them again I'd go 1.5" back there.

Did you test fit any other options? Was there a close runner up? I, too have an older car with much newer wheels and get mixed reactions but ultimately, it's comes down to what I like. As to yours, all that matters is that you enjoy how they look and that the car rides better - congrats!

My funds are a little tight, so I didn't test fit anything else. These are factory D90's, but I didn't weight them. I've posted the numbers I found online. I would have liked Fuchs, but I was able to get these, with new tires, for $400. That's quite a bit less than Fuchs, and the money can go elsewhere on the car.

I needed 1" spacers front and 2" back. 1.5" back might have been a little better on the back. The spacers ran me about $220 for all 4.

For posterity, here are their part numbers and specs:
Rear: 964.362.116.01 8JX16-ET52.3 9.9kg
Front: 964.382.112.01 6Jx16-ET52.3 ~9kg

What was your setup with the cups that resulted in rubbing? Ie. tire size, offsets, etc.

I have a set of cup replicas that have yet to have tires mounted yet. I've heard that 205/50-17 and 255/40-17 will work with SC/Carrera flares, but 255 seems like a big step up from the 225s that are on the rear now (and on 15" fuchs to boot).

Thanks!
Dave

You can read all the details here: Bad Tire Wear

Short version - 255's on the rear. Body is slightly asymmetrical and the left rear fender is slightly closer to the wheel than the right. If you loaded the car heavily (4 people) and drove aggressively (fast turns or acceleration) the fender would skim rubber off the tire.

The new tire on my new wheels has less of a shoulder, but it sticks out about as far. It looks like it is striking the fender on bumps - I have a couple very shallow partial arcs on the tire. It looks like I'm going to have to go to 1.5" spacers on the back... anyone need some 2s?

For posterity's sake:
My car is about 1/4 inch "off center". With the 2" spacers the driver's rear tire protrudes 0.5" outside the flare, while the passenger's side is exactly even. There is very slight rubbing on the driver's side which occurs when cornering to the right at high speed, or cornering right while going over bumps.

I am going to drop down to 1.5" spacers in the rear. That should move the driver's rear side to the position the passenger side is at now, which is safe.

Recap - With 964 (late offset, et52.3) 6+8x16 wheels I will be running 1" front and 1.5" rear spacers on my SC.
Front - 964.382.112.01 6Jx16-ET52.3 w/ P205/55/R16 89V tires
Rear - 964.362.116.01 8JX16-ET52.3 w/ P225/50/R16 91V tires
