Riveting F/G RSR flares?

Hi

I came across a German website.

FREISINGER MOTORSPORT - Porsche: Historic racing cars, Restoration, Tuning, Cars & parts

These guys seem to have a lot of experience restoring porsches.

I noticed that they rivet the fiberglass 1974 RSR fender extensions and quarter panel flares underneath the sheetmetal. The front RSR (vented) flares are also mounted on standard steel fenders, retaining the headlight, top section of the fender plus probably the rear mounting flange. Pics below.

Does anyone know if this is the original method that Porsche used?

It looks like they intend to leave the rivits in place and fill over them. This may be acceptable on a race car with a short life expectancy or a comprimised level of quality but I won't pass muster on a high level restoration.
The difference between the expansion/contraction rate of the metal/fiberglass will cause an immediate defect in the finished panel. I've never seen any evidence of this practice on a "factory" prepared car.
