Chip upgrade a DIY?
Is there anything more than pulling out the old chip and plugging in the new chip? Or is this something I should have my mechanic do?
IF its a DIY, is the chip located under the drivers seat?

Again this is a DIY'er job. albeit a little more tricky than the strut brace. I have a chip and did it myself, however I'm not sure I'd bother to put one in again, your decision. Just follow the directions and take your time.

Did you not notice any increase from the chip? I had two chips in a 944 Turbo and it was a dramatic change.
The chip is in combination to a air flow and exhaust.

Some DME-units have the EPROM soldered to the board ... ask Kurt B. about how much fun that one was to change???

There's a Pelican article dedicated to describing in detail on how to do it. It is easy as cake, and provides a nice boost in power and response. Some of the early '84s had the eprom soldered instead of socketed to the board, but it's not an issue on '89s.

Well it's been a long time since I put mine in. Maybe I said that because I can't really remember driving my car without the chip, so I'm spoiled now and only assume it wasn't much different? I dunno. Any way enjoy the project and enjoy your new found HP.
