Brake issue!!
When I purchased my '79 SC a few months back the brakes performed great - good firm pedal and good stopping power. My local shop recommended new lines as they were showing age with some cracks. I put it on the to do list...Recently my brake pedal became a bit soft. Soft in the sense it required more force to stop, and then it started hitting what felt like a stop but was not traveling all the way to the floor. On Wednesday I replaced the front brake lines, bled the crap out of them with a vacuum bleeder at the caliper, and found myself with the same issue as before - pedal traveling about 1.5 inches with great ease (can push by hand) and feeling as if it is hitting a stop. At this point I ordered a new master cylinder and replaced it (what a pain in the butt that job was!). MC was bench bled prior to install, then all four corners bled. No resolution!!! I had the daughter help bleed w/o the vacuum unit - still no resolution!
Any insight on what I may be missing here? Thanks all. |

sounds like time to rebuild the calipers, the rears tend to slowly freeze up. Try to push the car in neutral to see how good it rolls. if it is hard, jack it up and check for wheel rotation. They should turn free. So you might as well rebuild the calipers and new pads. Then you have a complete brake job. Not that expensive. Parts at the pelican parts depot (caliper kits, pads, rotors). Check the rotors for wear. That should pretty much do it for the brakes for several years till the brake fluid flush.
corrosion is a big problem in these calipers, (steel caliper/steel piston questionable dust seal) keeping them clean is essential.

Thanks J.B.
Tomorrow I will be ordering from PMB new front calipers as the passenger side is suspect. Rears and drivers front seem to be fine - when car is up on stands they turn free, though I will address these on the next money cycle... |
