Mystery Wire

A mystery question to all of the Pelican experts. I purchased my 1973.5 911T last year. I was looking at the engine tonight for no particular reason and noticed this mystery disconnected wire. I have had the car serviced several times and never a mention of the wire. Any idea what it is for?
Thanks.
Mike

Hard to tell from the picture. What color is the wire?

If it's brown it is probably a ground.

Brown with a white stripe could be a number of things.
Take a look at the schematics for your car and see what it could be.
Maybe take the fuse panel cover off as well to see where it goes.
Are all your lights working?

It the wire brown ir brown with a white stripe?

Looking at the Pt 2 of the wiring diagram, the brown wire may be a ground for the CDI or external voltage regulator or rear window defogger.

If your car alternator has an upgraded alternator with an internal voltage regulator, then it may not be needed for anything.

As noted above, does everything work ok? Can you remove the cover and look at what the other end of the wire is attached to?

Hi guys. No white stripe on the wire. I haven't noticed anything not working (except AC, which I assume needs freon). Here is a picture with the cover removed. Not sure what this device is either.
Thanks.

If the wire is just brown, it is most likely a ground. May not connect to anything as Harry indicated.
The device pictured...

Congratulations! You've found the flux capacitor....Time travel s now possible....
DeLorean used CIS too!
(Actually I believe it is a noise suppressor)
Now post up a few more pictures of the car, these close ups are a tease!

So if I connect the wire I will be transported back to 1985 once I hit 88 mph!!! I've actually gone 105 on a country road.
Here are some pictures of the outside of the car.

Nice, Your car looks great. Unfortunately I made the mistake of looking at the pics while someone was looking over my shoulder, now I have to find one that color for my wife. She loves purple cars.
What is the official name for that colour?

Thanks guys on that mystery silver cylinder thingy too from me. In the middle of rewiring the entire back half of the car right now and was wondering if I could ditch that silver thingy too. Originally a CIS car that has webers on the motor built for this restoration. Just for fun... and yeah I've been searching for a definitive answer all over the place here, but anyone know if I can lose the 12g red wire coming from the alt to the 14 pin? Not using any of the stuff that I can tell it powers. Hell, I even removed the 14 pin. Going a little nuts I think.

MikeN, love the purple, I like off beat Porsche colors. I'm in a Cobalt Blue rut myself. And thanks for starting this thread. It helped me a lot.

The official name is "Aubergine", which is just fancy/French for eggplant.
I like the cool 70's colors on the old Porsches. I am in the market later this year for a Cayenne and am bummed they got rid of the Amethyst Metallic color.
Thanks again for the answer on the wire. I'm just going to keep ignoring it.

The round thingy is a noise suppressor.

Does your rear defogger work?

Harry, what noise is it supposed to suppress? I only drive the car in the summer so I have never used the rear window defogger/defroster.

Have another look at the wire, as it appears to have a white stripe in the photos. It also looks like a wire that would be appropriate for a later model car, as they changed the striping design. Your car would have had circumferential stripes around the wire every few centimeters, not a continuous stripe along the length of the wire. I'd suggest following it to see where the other end goes.

Thanks JR. No white stripe. That's just the lighting on some of the earlier photos. The wire is sold brown.

Beautiful cars chaps!

Is the brown/white stripe wire not the famous DME earth wire that is disconnected in most cars? Mine is that way too. If you search 'brown wire' you will find it comes up a lot.

Here is what Draco wrote in an earlier thread..
"My understanding is it retards the timing advance allowing it to be Cali & Japanese Smog Compliant back in the day.

+1 disconnect it and tape it off securely."

Although the flux capacitor suppressor thingy is pretty interesting... Two disconnected wires eh?

JD, you are correct. It is brown and white. I was looking at the wire that is attached to the flux capacitor. The brown and white wire disappears into the car along with a bunch of others. The original owner added this stereo at some point as well as speakers in the door. The doors have now been restored and those speakers removed. Perhaps this wire leads to the sound suppressor for that later installed radio?
Thanks.
Mike
